Composed, arranged, mixed and partly filmed by Anastasis Sarakatsanos, in Summer 2010 as a final project for the course 'Composing for Film and Media" at the University of Sussex. In this project, 18 musicians were asked to improvise on a given tetrachord and a rhythmic pattern. Each musician was filmed individually on a different location for 12 minutes. Film and Sound were then edited as one in order to form the composition.

The compositional outcome is the result of editing and mixing the parts of each instrument filmed in different locations (using both 'classical' and 'world' instruments, representing different music cultures, filmed in urban and rural spaces in Greece and the UK). It is an ambitious project, aiming to create an audiovisual experience that will overcome the geographic, spiritual, economic, political and temporal boundaries of musical collaboration and will relate the viewer/listener to the controlled randomness of the creation process.

The role of music in film is, mostly -- even in cases of 'experimental' use -- complimentary and one-dimensional, highlighting certain elements of film. What I wish to further explore is the merging of music and film in one analogous and interdependent new medium, rather than the role of one medium serving the other.

The question is:
Say there are 60 million musicians all over the world playing music just right now. If you chose 10 out of them and put them in a common virtual space, would you actually come up with something musically interesting?
