Get my Destroyer "Live Laugh Launch" shirt here:

The U.S. can only produce roughly 1.5 destroyers per year. The solution may be to involve Japan and South Korea with production.

Ex-high end machinist here - Doesnt help when business leaders lay-off machinists for short term bonuses- there is a point when they dont come back.

Serving with the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet, it was common for Navy ships to undergo upgrades and refitting in Japan or the Philippines. During these periods, having Filipino and Japanese shipyard workers onboard was the norm. Occasionally, the U.S. Navy’s E-4 mafia engaged in informal bartering with these workers. For example, when we needed a TV stand welded in our berthing area, we traded uncensored American adult magazines to a Japanese welder to install it. In Subic, we exchanged scrap metal for customized belt buckles for our uniforms.

Many of the overseas workers took pride in their work and considered our ships their own. Likewise, U.S. Navy 7th Fleet sailors often integrated into the local communities, with some marrying locals. A number of sailors spent their entire 20-year careers abroad without ever returning to the continental United States.

@4:48 "Corruption is a concern." - don't worry I think we are making sure we will have plenty of that .

Before even finishing watching your episode, I would wonder if South Korea or Japan would engage in combined national security "anything" much less ship building after the way our current gov't administration treats our allies, embraces Russia, and 5h1t's on Ukraine.

Assuming that the US would help out Taiwan is being a tad optimistic at the moment

Apropos corruption, the U.S. has perfected the art of turning campaign donations (partially legalized corruption) into a high-yield investment strategy. A modest 'symbolic' contribution can unlock policies and perks worth billions—because who needs democracy when you can get a c. 750-to-1 return on your money?

Better idea. Tariff expensive inputs for ship building (steel, aluminum) and then make things wildly more expensive than they need to be. Then blame immigrants…

The EU will avoid sourcing strategic resources, weapons and ships from the USA wherever possible. The last few weeks have led to almost three quarters of people in France, Germany and the UK no longer seeing the USA as a partner, trustworthy or even neutral. I saw a video of what's going on with shipping and they kept talking about the USA and its allies. One day after the government questioned the agreement to build nuclear submarines with Australia. I have nothing against the US people but the government makes it impossible to see the USA as a partner in anything.

Seems like we need allies. Maybe stop shitting on them? Just a thought.

At the risk of disagreeing just to disagree I’m going to have to refute the notion that “a weld is a weld”
Quality shipbuilding requires highly skilled welders. In fact it requires highly skilled tradesmen for every aspect of construction.

Ryan, im not sure Allies are going to help out here. The current office holder at the Top of the US government is giving all Allies of the past, second thoughts about getting involved too deeply with the US.

Better call Sal over at "What's Going On with Shipping". He has had a few things to say about this over the years.

the way things are going, partners and allies will soon become a foreign concept to the us.

Three months ago I would've cheered USA on and think of ways Europe could help out for mutual benefit. However, as your president has taken a dump on Ukraine, Canada, Mexico, Nato and Europe as a whole I couldn't care less anymore. I hope your new partner Russia wants to build ships for you, I heard they are especially good at underwater vessels. Good luck with your new friends!
I love you channel Ryan, so this has nothing to do with you, but I cannot ignore reality.

When I hear Americans say the phrase, “We can make a deal on it, ” I want to vomit. Thanks, Donald. We live in strange times.

Bath Iron Works in Maine currently builds half our destroyers each year. BIW could easily expand into the old Liberty Ship yard in Portland to double or even triple its destroyer building capacity. They just need the federal budget to reacquire the land and build infostructure.

Canada just finished building its fleet of arctic patrol ships and is now focused on destroyers in one yard while the other two focus on supply ships and ice breakers. The destroyers are Type 26 (Lockheed/BAE) derived designs (similar to UK and Australia) and use the same combat control systems as the US Navy. The US could talk to the Canadian shipyards, however there is the issue of a trade war and other threats from the US that may make that collaboration challenging.

I know one. My uncle used to work at the philly navy yard. Fortunately for him he got transferred instead of canned. Now he's retired as I'm sure the majority of other former yard workers are.

The only problem with asking South Korea & Japan to build some of your naval ships is, with the US government pivoting towards Russia and general isolationism, they might feel the need to build up their own navies.
That said UK needed four RFA Tide Class tankers a few years back and had them built in South Korea. No UK yards tendered for the contract as they couldn't fulfill the timescale criteria. All the sensitive electronics were fitted in the UK.
