10 years ago almost to the day of this comment, I was 16 years old starting college (I live in the UK). I met a girl (I'm not mentioning names) that in time would completely change my life. It's a little complicated though. From the day I first met her I could tell she was no ordinary person. She had this vibe and presence that was unlike anything I had ever known. It was an immense joy to be around her. I fell for her really fast, but I made a string of stupid mistakes and we never got together, we just remained friends. When the year finished, she left college and I haven't seen her since despite trying to reconnect with her. A few years later I began my descent into a bad depression and loneliness that lasted a few years, and it was at this time that I realised how much I had thrown away by messing things up with her. I started to remember how much better things were for me in my childhood and how being around her felt like I was returning to those days and how it felt amazing to feel like that again. She was basically the spirit of my childhood if it could take the form of a person.

Ever since, I've collected stuff that she was passionate about and loved to help me retain her memory. I believe that this made a difference in me not committing suicide when I was at the worst of my depression. Knowing her and remembering her helped me to keep seeing that there are wonderful people out there somewhere. Now I have a wonderful girlfriend and my life is getting back on track and I owe a lot of this to this girl. It is one of my biggest regrets that I pushed her away. A part of me would absolutely love to see her again, but there's also a bigger part of me that thinks it would be better if I just let her get on with her life.

I did this to my mother. I moved from California to Florida for a job. Came back 2 years later during Christmas and did not tell anyone by my best friend. Went over to my moms and let myself in with my key to her house. She was shocked when I walked into the living room out of nowhere.
