Dirty Little Secret Why Your Shop Vac Has NO Suction!

There is a dirty little secret why your shop vac has NO suction. The fix is very easy and only takes a few minutes to fix. The first thing you want to do is open your shop vac up. You want to be able to get to the filter as this is 90% of the reason your shop vac has no suction. You have to clean or replace it. I like to save money so I just take my bower and clean off the filter and place it back on and that is it! Your shop vac will now suck like it was brand new. If you use your shop vac every day, I recommend cleaning the filter once a week to ensure you have optimal suction.

I was hoping for something more in-depth - I figured it out easily (the crowd goes wild) I ended up opening the motor and blowing the dust out with a air dust removing tool on the air compressor. It was clogged with hair and dust when opened to check. Closed it back up, put on a fresh new filter and it’s just like new sound wise.

When the shop vac filter needs cleaning I use my canister house vac's crevice tool to clean the shop vac filter after you knock off the big pieces with a paint stick or whatever, then use the shop vac to clean the insides of the house canister vac. Every home needs the 2 type vacuums if they want to keep them both running for, in my case 3 decades.

My shop vac was hardly working. I checked the filters - good. I pulled the hose off and the suction at the shop vac hose opening was good. Something was wrong with the hose. I discovered a large clog in the hose at the shop vac end. I couldn't unclog it because of the elbow joint end of the hose. I ended up cutting the hose off of the elbow joint of the hose, cleaning the clog out, then shoved the rest of the hose back onto the elbow joint of the hose. I thought that I would need a hose clamp to eliminate any air leaks at the new junction of the hose and elbow joint, but nope. I tried the shop vac now and it worked just fine as is.

I have seen a few videos where guys have made their own dust collection system using just a small shop vac and they appear to work really well. So, I will try one my own too and hopefully get good results

Good tip i learned on youtube is to buy pool filter "scum socks" and put over air filter. Just slip it off and empty shop vac canister. Much cheaper than buying new filter and much less messy than taking filter off each time to clean.

If you’re saying that the only reason is because the filter is dirty or not on there right, then why can’t you run it without a filter? Would it suck then? Also, why is the filter so important? Thank you.

Thank you for the video:) I forgot to put my filter back on my shop vac before I turned it on for a few minutes:( Now its not sucking hard at all. Do I have to buy a new one? I'm afraid the debris might have gotten into the motor?

i know i am late to the game and you prob wont answer but even after blowing it away with 150 psi of air for 3 minutes it sucks but not as great as before. If you dont answer im just going to try with a spare clean filter that came with my vac.

I sprayed my hepa filter off with water and now I have no suction. I just sprayed it with the hose because I couldn’t remove filter.

Can you run it without the filter. Trying to suck water out if a turtle tank. I feel like I've done it that way before but it isn't working this time.
