Another Raya and The Last Dragon shot breakdown! This was my first sequence of shots on the movie and a fun combination of performance, action, creative and technical.

I’ve added a few stages where you can see multiple different approaches...it looked pretty rough for a while 😂 A fun challenge and thank goodness for lighting, tech anim and effects to help the transformation work! Special thanks to @amysmeed , @malconpierce and @brianfmenz for your leadership and guidance with these shots! Happy Friday😁

I had a lot of questions from my previous post about the transformation in this shot from Raya and The Last Dragon ! The direction was to have the transformation be smooth and elegant. A lot of times transformations in animation happen during big movements, or cartoony actions. I’ve always been inspired by the genie transformations. For this shot in particular, I tried to make the swimming strokes/speed of the human and dragon form of sisu identical. Then it was just a matter of pushing the rig around and using some deformers to hide sections of the body. There was also the added benefit of this being underwater! Thank goodness for bubbles and the wonderful hair/cloth sim, everyone working together to get a smooth transition! Please feel free to ask additional questions below!
