Dashanan was named ravan mahadev, the story goes as, Ravan wanted to be a shiv bhakt, he with his 10 heads then did ghor tapasya to impress shiv but the 10 heads depicted his ego or ahankar so he decide to cut his heads one by one and present it to lord shiv . Mahadev was impressed and blessed him with the name ravan, ravan was known as param bhakt of shiv
