I sat as a juror in a federal case earlier this year and they had a court stenographer there who was able to follow along with everything being said. Only paused to ask for clarifications and went right back to typing.

I had an aunt that was a stenographer and it was pretty crazy when she would work. It was super fast. She would write all weird and using shorthand but be able to read back everything you said word for word. It was pretty cool.
