We love our Model Y but thinking we also need a Model 3 for around town travel.

"Constant Improvement" - that's the slogan of Industrial Engineers
Sadly most US car manufacturers don't believe in it and keep all improvements until the model is 5 years old and then add a few of the improvements to the upgrade.

Tesla does it constantly and the reason Ford and GM will never catch Tesla and eventually go bankrupt.

The problem with Musk is that he can’t stop himself from saying everything in his head. Of course, by saying that this system is not yet 100% optimized, the idiots and haters will still imply and let everyone know that the pack is not efficient enough, which is obviously not the reality. We know
1. It is 68 kwh at 100%. This has been measured while charging the car
2. Regen still works at 100%, again reported by owners. So suspicion is that the pack is being limited to 68 kwh

What we don't know is how many cells in the pack. Waiting for Sandy Munro to tell us. They suspect it is 880.

Surely you use prismatic cells the pack utilisation will be much better. The issue is that no-one can make decent prismatic cells. I expect that BYD Blade should be better. The issue is that LFP is not that energy dens

I think people with a Tesla model Y structural battery pack already has 1000km EV which has been limited by software that will be made accessible by several over the air updates.
It's my believe that Tesla is software limiting its model Y structural battery packs by about 50%.
I think Tesla is holding its cards very close to its chest waiting to see what the competition are able to achieve.

I would believe that because they are sandbagging because those batteries are lighter with more capacity. Those cars could go 400+ miles if optimally packed. Also battery swap could be easier.

Like Sam said before, Tesla can not simply make this version better than 2170 version. No one would want the lesser 2170 version so prices would have to change to reflect this. Maybe later when all US Y's are 4680 they will be upgraded over the air?
