You are so right! When my shop started to grow I calculated everything I am paying. I am also paying VAT, and PayPal fees (and they vary depending on the country customer is paying from!), in total in an item costs 100%, I have to pay between 13.73% and 14.63%. And PayPal fees are tricky since they have minimum fee, so it is not the same if you have items that cost 5$ or 50$. For smaller amounts the fee can go up to 15% for PP only! After detailed calculations and using CPC info, my conversion rate I bumped my prices 3x on average. My shop is still growing, nobody complains about the prices, but now I can actually earn something, instead of paying for selling.

You're so great at explaining things, as always! I will keep this video bookmarked for future reference. :)
To be honest I've long since lost track of all the different fees, but it was around what I expected to pay.
looking at my monthly statements fees are a bit below 1/4 of sales, so somewhere between 20-25% in total for my main shop. I would have to check the other ones, I think fees might be a bit higher there because I don't sell so much in them as I do in my main shop.
I'm in the EU.

Thanks. I didn't realise the vat was charged to the customer. I thought I would have to build that into my pricing, so that's good.

Good video - thanks! I didn't realize I was paying a payment processing fee on the taxes collected. This really does make me wonder how so many of my competitors in the custom portrait niche can sell for such low prices. They literally must be making $2 an hour!

Well Said Pam, the best video I have seen on this and very clearly explained. Always trying to explain this to my Wife/Biz Partner. It's an easy way to make nothing... I would like to see more people on Etsy talking about how much profits they make.... instead of Turnover! Can't get rich with Turnover :)

1:07 - My guess is 15%
(basing that on 10 orders a day of an average of $30 per order (with 10% of those from Offsite Ads) with 100 active listings and subscriptions to Etsy Plus and Pattern, no Etsy Ads or and 1/100 orders getting 10% off from abandoned carts)

Running things I didn't think about or take into account:
- Different countries have different fees (I am in Canada)
- Processing fees on their taxes paid (didn't even think about that)
- Taxes on fees we pay (although it looks like in Canada we don't)

Plus their .18 cents for shipping convenience for the labels. And if you buy the label somewhere else they still charge you, unless you make your listing free shipping.

I figure 15% for my Etsy fees. I don't do the ads or any of that other stuff. I think 15% might be a little high, but I roll that into how much of a pain listing on Etsy is. :P

Last 12 months 12%, this year 11.8%, last year 12% (based on monthly statements sales and credits, fees and taxes on the Etsy sales app) However if you use bank deposits against Etsy VAT reports, its much bleaker 20.8 % for this tax year

Very informative! I had wondered if we were paying on taxes collected. What about the shipping labels that we purchase? Are there any additional hidden fees on those?

Off site ads 15% is also on your shipping price, so Etsy taking 20% on the shipping price. I believe?

Hi Pam,
With the new Tax year approaching would you mind explaining the Etsy sales downloads, they never seem to add up from one report to another, the vat report differs too, thank you

I think I pay about 15% in fees depending on the price of the item it will be a bit more on lower priced items. That would be etsy selling fees on item and shipping payment processing fees on item and shipping listing fees and VAT on throws. I am doing a bit of an experiment just now so do have Etsy + and Etsy added so I will be paying more but I don't usually and probably won't use them after the 1 month testing it. I don't have offsite adds but I probably will have to in the next few weeks as I am close to the $10000 even thou my shop was closed for 4 months last years.

Just commenting on the offsite VS coupon rant. I think it's more about lack of control. With a coupon it's their own choice where as etsy offsite they don't get a say in the matter. And I think that's what they're complaining about really

I think I was paying 20% in total fees, but that was before I got added to the off site marketing . So now I have no idea what it will be if I get a sale via OSM. I just hope I do not. The 20% is with no ads, no addons etc, just the real basics.

I am confused as to why the $100 sale is 8.45% and a $10 sale is 12.6% fees. Where does the extra percentage come from?

ssfoster

Why is the fee percentage higher for lower priced items?
