Straw looks like a great game.
I think that you could easily upgrade Flipping Flags by acquiring a world map and offering bonus points for pointing to what country the flag belongs to. If the player who correctly matched the flag to a country can't point it out on the map for bonus points, then other players get an opportunity (maybe in order from the player with the least points on up?) to point to where the flag goes. If you make the geography competitive, I think that kids will perk right up on it as they try to get more and more points.
Also, playing games in another language can be a good way to learn. MYFAROG, for example, was designed to help kids learn English and math. It features a lot of research into prehistoric European culture, as well. Kids will learn about reconstructed holidays, names, mores, etc. The parent, however, has to tailor the complexity of the rules to the players. Over time, the children will learn to keep more and more factors in mind as they adventure in the world of Thule, so they will develop their mental math and decision making skills, too.

Kap your face when Lynn pulled out Potion Explosion... totally agree with her, this is a great game for pattern recognition. I've had a blast with this with younger gamers in my life, this and Sagrada are amazing for that sort of play (even with someone as young as 4).

I think Lynn was thinking kids, whereas you were just thinking educational for anyone. Cool vid guys.

I want to try Straw but can't find it anywhere :(. Instead I'm just gonna buy Flipping Flags (cheapest here) or Barenpark (a bit pricey but .. it really looks interesting). Currently my favourite educational game is Chess (lol) and Paperback
