Pärt Uusberg tried to get into the performing arts school twice, but in retrospect he is happy that he was not accepted. "At the time I was shocked by it, but now I am very grateful that I can connect my days with music, which is dearer than anything else to me." Next Sunday, he will step out of Gustav Ernesaksa's shadow, in front of the youth song party choir.

He does not like when people in tears are filmed at a song party, nor does he like the expression "teardropper"
Many things come to him when it is no longer so important to him
To him, "Holy is the land" means that the whole world is holy, but he does not mind if you think of Estonia
The youth song and dance festival, postponed for a year due to the corona pandemic, is only a week away. Pärt Uusberg, the artistic director of the "Pyha on maa" singing party, is happy to announce that according to the preliminary rehearsals, the choral song is living quite nicely despite the corona isolation. The composer and choir director, who has been singing at carols since he was little and made his conducting debut at the 2019 carol, says he is happy to be able to contribute to a tradition he has been a part of since he was a child.

Parking summary of the song party: the city allowed parking on green areas, mupo issued 148 fines

I did a poll of my early teenage friends who are hot right now in music. The daughters shouted in unison: "Pärt Uusberg!" Isn't it flattering?

Can't really comment on that. Pleasantly surprising. After all, it was choir singers.

Did you know you have your own fan base? Who do you think your audience is?

I've still understood a little from this, that there are people who have liked my creations. This has been demonstrated even by the author's evenings with the choir Good Night, Brother, which went to full halls. Beautiful words are sometimes written here and there - they always bring joy and support.

Feedback is very important to a creative person. I have realized that the longer I have been active in the creative field, the less feedback remains, which is sometimes a shame.

On the other hand, I have also been beaten with harsh criticism in the columns of some newspapers. All in all, this has also been somewhat good, as it has hardened me and made me more autonomous. If you understand that not everyone likes your work and some can even be irritated, then after being hurt there is something liberating about it, because it takes away the fear of being hurt and the desire to please someone.

I like the sentence of my subject teacher Tõnu Kõrvitsa: «Everyone has their own song to sing.» I'm just singing my song too. Some people like this song, some don't, that's totally normal.

Gustav Ernesaks, the singer's father, has said: «Let's be careful when evaluating applause. Let's immediately discount the part of sympathy, friendship, acquaintance and diplomacy.» How do you distinguish between genuine and insincere appreciation?

All in all, in this multiplicity of opinions, the creator is always alone. One could even say somewhat poetically that the creator is always with the Creator and mediates creation through his soul. What happens next is no longer under the control of the creator, and in some ways it's not worth taking too seriously.

Composer Rene Eespere once told one of his students that there are always those who like it, those who don't like it and those who don't care. It's worth taking it easy, it seems to me. However, it is important to always be completely honest in your creations. Write what you hear inside. There is no point in wasting your already limited time on pleasing someone.

But to be more specific, you can distinguish the sincere from the insincere quite easily. You just recognize it.
