My sister, niece and my wife were hyped and really wanted to like the film. We even all dressed up in pink to go to the movies.
Unfortunately, the film was a real letdown. My niece no longer understood the world (14 years old) because she expected something completely different. She has watched all previous Barbie movies and series. Nobody asks to do something in this direction/topic, but ffs.
It was pretty much the same for us adults. It felt more like a 30-cat feminist professor lecturing on gender studies in the most stereotypical way possible. Pure ideology.
It started relatively well, but after 25 minutes it became almost unbearable. I really don't understand how some reviewers can rate this film as "profound" or "brilliant". It puts the simplest and most superficial things/problems of our social life into empty phrases in such a way that it seems profound, but basically says something like "go your own way and believe in yourself". Otherwise 80% of the film is about "men bad, women good". All the male characters in this film are either totally incompetent idiots, extreme sexists or laughable beings standing in the shadow of women.
The only target group of this film are embittered (older) women or modern-day feminists. Nothing for children, men or family-oriented women.
The only thing you could appreciate: Everything technical and design aspects.

I actually think this had a really positive message toward men. As a male I appreciate the narrative that men do deal with pressures and mental health issues as well. Ken represented men with insecurities such as myself perfectly and I found comfort that I don't have to define myself to anyone else's standards other than just be be and my own person. I enjoyed the movie

The trailer was absolutely deceptive. As a barbie fan who grew up with several Barbie's and Ken's, this movie broke my heart. I absolutely hated it and it's message.

I’m Meekachii’s sister and we had a discussion about this. We disagreed on points & agreed on others. One very valid point I’ve seen, is that people were wanting to bring their kids and weren’t expecting there to be mature themes. I only stream, without commercials, so I had the advantage of not being misled or what have you. The reason I wanted to see it WAS because it had deeper messages but I was informed, going in.

Now some jokes that didn’t set well with people, were usually with best intentions. I thought Barbie snubbing Ken about being on the cabinet was just a cheeky joke about women’s oppression. I mean, we went through it& we can giggle 🤷🏼‍♀️ It was a joke for adults, though of course & I don’t think it would have received such harsh criticisms if it were presented a movie for both kids and adults.

There’s lovely messages for girls to feel beautiful being perfect. When Barbie is sitting next to an elderly woman and looks stunned & says “You’re so beautiful” .. forget it, water works. When the creator of Barbie (forgot name) is consoling Barbie crying for having imperfections, she told her she thought she was more beautiful this way.

It could have had more balance with adult jokes & having light-hearted fun for the kids.

Sorry you wanted a dumb fun movie with no thought behind it.

Any woman who breaks up with their man over this movie deserves to be alone.

I took the message as you are enough for yourself. I can see how people with a traditional mindset may have disagreed. I don’t think she was saying women are better, and men suck. I didn’t take the portrayals of Ken as the director message to the audience of how men are. To some extent I did. I took it as satire on our society. It was a little too political. but I enjoyed it. I agree with you that it didn’t have a direction. It kinda reminded me of a long SNL Barbie sketch lol at times.

The other criticism I would say is that the ‘real world’ is not as harsh as it was described. This would have a been how our culture was 2010-2015.

I know you may not agree but Barbie was intentionally designed to not be married or have kids so I can understand why she treated Ken the way she treated him. He was literally designed as an accessory to Barbie.

What I did like about the movie is that it didn’t get into gender and sexual identity.

Barbie Land was the character's world through little girls' eyes, where Barbies are the focal point and Kens are vestigial at best. I don't extrapolate this world into a treatise on the "real world" as a whole or male vs. female differences.

COMPLETELY agree with you guys on this.

Very similar to how they said people who hated Episode 8 were sexist, even though people loved 7. It’s crazy how they shout down people for not liking certain things. I will also say that I’m over agendas/politics in movie, games, and shows. Even if I agree with them, I’m so over it. That’s why Dungeons & Dragons was so good, it was just a good, fun movie.

It’s a one time watch for me. Had some laughs, but overall, I felt it lacked in plot for the Mattel corp.I mainly saw it to see what the hype was about and of course Margot Robbie. The last act was very goofy as well.

I was such a big Barbie fan as a kid, but I've had absolutely no interest in this movie since the trailer released because I had a feeling this is the direction they'd take with it.

I don’t think I had the same letdown as you all because my expectations were modest and I wasn’t expecting a straight down the middle lighthearted film.

You can’t really deny the production quality or the performance of the cast, but the writing and overall plot was just really flat and not all all compelling.

The themes were really cliche and on the nose. Some of the reviews I saw beforehand described it as complex or subversive but I couldn’t disagree more. It was a steady barrage of cliché feminist tropes that left me rolling my eyes. It’s not that I was offended or disagreed with the message per se, but it wasn’t nearly as clever or witty as the writers and directors thought. In fact it was quite bland and at many points tiresome.

Omg yes went to see it and did not care for it. Trailer made it seem like a funny light-hearted thing but i didn't care for the plot or the heavy handed yet watered down feminist cheerleading. Ken was the best and they should make a spin off with him.

I thought the Barbie Movie was anti Barbie! I liked the start of the movie. The Barbie world was fine then we got to the real world which was feminist hallucinations. Uh, anyone think that Barbie is loved by people?

Barbie is a masterpiece of propaganda.
The message of the movie is that all women are beautiful and perfect and all men are at best useless and at worst dangerous. It's Mein Kampf written by Gloria Steinem. However it is very beautifully camouflaged as a comedy, a musical and a silly children's movie.
Therefore if any men are offended by the movie women can simply brush that criticism off by saying "It's a children's movie about a plastic doll! Why are you getting offended? You must be a very insecure man." (It's not a children's movie; it's rated PG-13 not G. This is not a new version of "Toy Story".)
The inclusion of Allan is brilliant. He is an included as an example of a nice man, a man who is an ally of women, probably gay, so there is one token good male character. The catch is however that even he is depicted as being clumsy, timid and submissive to the women. He is a male "Uncle Tom".
I think that the movie was produced to promote anti-men sexist bigotry and it does so brilliantly.
I can imagine the opposite movie being created with all the men good and all the women bad. In Iran.

ITS NOT SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE
TO DISLIKE THE BARBIE MOVIE. Thank you.
The Barbierians have become The Monsters

I think I want to watch it now. To see how bad it is. Cause I never plan on watching it before.

People need to be equal. No one is above of others.
