FUNNY STORY:

My parents used to dine at this restaurant every friday when they were dating. They always tell me that there's was this server there who always made sure everything was perfect, even asking the cooks to make a new batch of an item my dad really liked if there was none left in the buffet, and they always tipped him. Mind you we are Brazilian, and we don't have a tipping culture, unless you are very comfortable financially or the service was really really amazing.

Once, in the week of Christmas eve, they ate there, and counted exactly the amount of their bill. When the server got to the table to collect it, he looked kinda sad, because they always tipped, and it was Christmas time, when everyone feels more inclined to tip as a gift. So my parents looked at him and said:

— Now that we gave you the tip, you can pay the bill with this. — sliding him their card. He looked so happy!

I feel awful for the tip one, becuase the US takes advantage of its servers and expects customers to pay them, but at the same time, not getting a tip on such a large order meant so much time and effort with literally 0 reward. Change the system

Last one was pretty relatable except maybe the medal part 😅

In Europe employeers are expected to pay their employees, not the customers
edit: omfg the people in the replies are missing the point. I never said I'm against tipping, I just said that it's a shame that we have to tip in the first place. Frankly, I wouldn't mind leaving a tip if the service is good, but in my opinion that's the wrong way to solve the issue

As a european 53$ for a tip is fucking crazy man

Tips, man.
Corporations were really smart to somehow make people fight over the paycheck that the corporation was supposed to give to them

In Europe we don’t tip unless the service was really outstanding. HOWEVER, if you’re going to another country you need to adapt to their culture and whether you like it or not, America has a big tipping culture so as a tourist you still have to tip. I mean when Americans come to Europe we expect them to follow our norms and we get mad when they don’t. If you don’t want to tip your servers then maybe don’t go to America where you are expected to do so?

As someone currently living in Finland, paying for my meal and then getting the change back to the last cent makes me feel so powerful somehow.

Imagine asking your son the next day what he wanted to call about and finding out he won bronze in the Olympics 😂😂😂

I honestly wouldn’t care about the tipping one but you can tell that they’re just doing it to feel like they’re better than everyone else

as a european - absolutely agree, i am not leaving a tip if you weren't at least pleasant

Ok but like if the first one just didnt want to talk about her streams and panicked and said "what's twitch" to avoid answering thats so real

That poor last guy. If one of my brothers won an Olympic medal, there would be twenty family members cheering them on from the sidelines, both parents and all siblings included. His mother doesn't deserve such an accomplished son.

I hate that people expect Americans to follow all of the foreign countries social norms when visiting but when Americans ask the same we are ridiculed and shamed. You may disagree with tipping but it’s part of dining at restaurants in the US. Whether you like it or not if you’re visiting either respect it or get out. Same you would say to an American disrespecting your country’s norms.

Tipping in Europe is more like: if the waiter was really good, we tip them. It's an exception. At least that's how I always interpreted it. If that's not the case, then all restaurants I've ever been to hate me.

While I do hate tipping… you can’t be mad if Americans don’t respect your culture if when you come to the US you don’t tip/ complain about tipping

The Europeans probably saw there was a service fee.
