If you ask for "tea" at a restaurant and you are automatically given sweet tea, you're in the south.

I go by the sweet tea rule. If you ask for sweet tea and they give you a packet of sugar on the side, they ain't southern.

Who doesn’t consider NC as part of the south? Virginia I get but there’s no ambiguity at all with NC, it’s southern.

Anything below the mason-dixon line is south. That's the most simple way to put it.
And I've never heard anyone deny that texas is southern.

Florida is "Beyond the South, " not the South. We in the true "South" think of Florida as being its own thing. Same with Texas, really. Texas is the Lonestar State, and it almost seems like a separate country. The states you mentioned above us (Kentucky, etc) are on the Mason-Dixon line, so they're in a gray area. They're neither North nor South. Delaware is DEFINITELY not the South, and Washington DC is a symbol of the North to many people in the South. So what you really have is the real South, and scattered around it are Alligator Land (FL), YeeHaw's-ville (TX), the "Buffer Zone" (KY, WV, etc), "Corruption City" (DC), and just "The North" (Delaware).
