Method to the madness | NYC Urban Skating breakdown

“Reckless” is a term that many people have used for me. NGL, I don’t like it. There is calculus, attention, and focus whenever I skate but especially in highly dynamic urban settings.

This is a little breakdown on how I navigate through NYC and the considerations I take in real time. This kind of urban skating has its risks, but one thing should be VERY clear. IF YOU DONT KNOW, DONT GO! Never do anything without having information that makes it clear whether you have a lane or not.

the fact that people cant predict your movement is what makes it reckless. No one knows what rules youre following so then you are moving in trafic unpredictably which then is reckless bc others have no way of making choices based in at least a foundation of understood rules of traffic. Then its more likely that anything can happen... i agree its reckless. calculation just for yourself from your perspective does not mean you are not being reckless. A car going 150 mph down a strip in a city is likely calculating as well but not for everyone else who is walking or driving on that street.

I like these, it helps train us who want to get into urban skate transportation. I stick to bike lanes but want to blade like you do

I'm pretty sure people find all the cutting into different lanes so close to cars, reckless. Like you are playing Subway Surfers, lol. Then I have yet to see any videos of you wearing reflectors at night. Also, it's hard to tell, but it's almost like you avoid any bike lanes when there are bike lanes, lol.

But yeah, if you are going to use the street and don't want to be bottlenecked anywhere, I guess you would have to merge as often as you do, considering the road conditions. Since cars go slower, it might not be as dangerous, as you haven't gotten in an accident yet (I don't think) or died. However, it does seem questionable.

Like, is this a common thing? I saw some scooters on the side using like a bike lane. What if all these people were subway surfing like you? (Maybe they do). I just think that if this happened all the time, there would be more rules imposed, because it seems potentially problematic and open to accidents. (Maybe a lot of people do skate like this in the streets of NY). There don't seem to be any bike lanes that stretch the full length, so maybe this is the only way to do it.

There are some cuts where you could be in a car's blind spot. I wonder if they freak out or not, lol. Like, just noticing you on the side of their car like a foot or two away, lol. But yeah, when you cut, it's in areas where things are congested, slow, and all, but still. If I lived in NY, maybe this would all seem perfectly normal:)

I understand you’re making educated decisions on the go that makes complete sense, I think it’s dangerous and because literally anything can happen I think most people just don’t want to be the person who runs a skater over and kills them cause they came flying out into the intersection after getting hit by a car or a door or tripping over a rock or literally just making a bad decision. But could just be me yk, idk I personally want to make it to my coffin without harming people like that
