We have a first look at the 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 with details on what the all-new supercharged beast will have under the hood.

Hear that whooshing sound? That's not the supercharger whine on the new 2020 Shelby GT500, it's a sigh of relief from Mustang fans who have been waiting for this car for five years! 2014 was the last time Ford had a GT500 Mustang in its stable, but Ford says the 2020 GT500 is going to be worth the wait. There are still secrets to be discovered, but from what we know so far, this snake is going to have some bite. Edmunds special correspondent Elana Scherr gets a preview of the long-awaited GT500.

Q: What engine is in the 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500?
A: Under the GT500-only bulge hood will be a supercharged 5.2-liter V8. It's the same aluminum block as is in the GT350. But instead of going with the exotic flat-plane crank, the GT500 will be a more traditional muscle-car setup with a crossplane crank. The entire rotating assembly has been beefed up to handle more horsepower. How much more horsepower? Argh! Ford won't tell us yet! We do know that it will be more than 700 hp, go 0-60 mph in the mid-3-second range, and run a quarter-mile time in the high-10 seconds. To get those numbers from a smaller V8 than you'll find in its ponycar competitors, the Mustang has an enormous 2.65-liter Roots-type supercharger tucked between the aluminum heads.

Q: Is it available in a manual?
A: No! But it's also not available with the 10-speed auto. The GT500 has its own gearbox, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), inspired by the performance of the Ford GT supercar but designed by Tremec specifically for the GT500 Mustang. Ford says the DCT can switch gears in less than 100 milliseconds, making shifts faster for drag racing, road courses, or just impressing your friends on the way to dinner. The transmission is tuned to work in several drive modes ― including Normal, Weather, Sport, Drag and Track ― which also trigger changes in the MagneRide suspension, steering and throttle response. The GT500 also offers line lock and launch control to help you put the power to the pavement.

Q: When will you know everything about it?
A: We're still waiting to hear numbers for horsepower and pricing, but the Shelby GT500 should have more than 700 hp and sit above the Shelby GT350R in terms of price. Ford says the car should be available in fall 2019.

I am very hooked on this color! The DCT was an awesome decision by Ford. Overall this card is fantastic looking. Some are upset no manual right now but for the sake of top performance out of this car I am glad manual is not the only option as with previous GT500s. A manual option would be nice for those that really want it though. I like rowing gears but it's something I wouldn't demand here.

This is a beautiful car. I have to reconcile myself to the fact that DCT is here to stay and enjoy this car. I still have my 60bhp non-power steering, manual transmission 1993 maruti zen, if i ever need to have a retro pure 90s car driving experience. Time to evolve into the future now.
