How to surf against a legend - Volcom Pipe Pro Day 2 Recap

During Day 2 in macking, proper Pipeline, Evan Geiselman eliminates event favorite John Florence. While Day 1 at the Pipe Masters was sun-filled, Backdoory and not-quite-Pipe, Day 2 was a different story entirely. Day 2 was dark clouds, 3rd Reef roll-throughs, air-drops and, well, tricky.

Pipeline was proper, firing at 8-10 ft plus from the northwest, all lefts and nothing mellow about her, giving the rest of Round 2 and 3 opportunities for that "heat you've always dreamed of."

And what's that dream, you ask? One, where the 'ole Banzai is big, offshore and there's a legend in your heat that you've gotta beat in front of a whole world watching.

And as fate would have it, Florida's Evan Geiselman and CA's Parker Coffin had just that heat with a deemed "unstoppable" John John Florence stalking the bowl beside them.

But as great (young) men do, in times that truly test your mettle, Evan Geiselman threw himself over a couple jacking, deep west bowls, slipping impossibly beneath a falling fatal lip to get massively pitted and spat out into a brave new world. Not once, but twice, earning a 9.63 for the first and 8.9 for the second.

Parker Coffin followed suit with some similar, but lesser scores, the both of them putting Pipe's finest (John John) in Combo Town.

Said Evan of his first near perfect smoker: "Parker was actually giving it a really good look. I saw his eyes light up and he was actually where it was a little more makeable. I was deeper than him but I thought I can't let him start out with such a good score off the bat, so I'd go anyway. But I made it. It worked out. It was just one of those heats where everything went my way."

Other men who's day went their way included Tanner Gudauskas, Mitch Coleborn, Jamie O'Brien, Chris Ward, Kelly Slater, Dusty Payne and Kalani David.

As Evan Geiselman and Parker Coffin let the endorphins from that heat with John John burn off, they -- and the rest of Round 64 advancers -- wait for round of 32 and the finals to run on Wednesday.
