Basic Drawing Materials, Commonly Used in Drawing

Most companies make about 17 to 19 different variety of graphite pencils. A good selection is 4h 2h HB 2B 4B. These five are the most commonly recommended to start out with drawing.

what brand of pencils are the best? why do you like staedtler?

Times have certainly changed in nine years. Pink Pearle erasers were always horrible, and now there is no excuse to use them. Or gum erasers, either, for that matter. They don't work nearly as well as the vinyl/plastic erasers, and you can buy a box of ten Pentel vivyl/plastic erasers for as little as eight dollars.

Kneaded erasrers are great, but two up to date erasers to add to you drawing kit are the Tombow Mono, which is the best highlight eraser made, and Blu Tack, which is that stuff you use to hang posters and other things from the wall. It's like a kneaded eraser on steroids. It doesn't replace a kneaded eraser, unless you want it to, which some artists do, but it's an addition to the kneaded eraser.

Electric erasers are also a heck o0f a lot better than they were nine years ago, but there are some bad brands. I prefer Derwent, but there are a couple of other very good brands.
