It ISN'T the same for Catholics/Protestants #catholicapologetics

Generically using reason doesn't make the methodology of joining the Catholic Church vs joining Protestant sects the exact same. The difference is between finding the Church to be divinely established and entrusted/guided by God to teach true doctrine vs trying to find true doctrine on your own from the Bible and only thereafter finding a group who agrees with you. In the first case, you submit to the teachings of the Catholic Church because what She teaches must be true. In the second case, you conditionally submit to a Protestant church or tradition only insofar as they agree with your interpretation of Scripture. The extent to which they have authority over you ends when there's a disagreement and you leave for an alternative tradition.

The larger video has helped me leave Protestantism. Don’t know if I can say I’m Catholic, but I am approaching there. Your channel has been a huge help on my journey

Exactly my catholic brother for what you’ve spoken is true about there can’t be any unity of understanding and belief in God in so many different ways of explaining interpreting translating and understanding and believing in God for it’s so clearly bright as the Sunlight that believing seeking and understanding God in many different ways IS NOT BEING AND BELIEVING IN GOD ONE WAY ONLY though there’s many things to learn and understand about God in a true way.Marvelous informative presentation of yours my catholic brother I just really really hope that people outside of the Catholic Churches traditional teachings may someday be enlightened by the mercy of God the Trinity Amen 🙏

You still have to distinguish between Catholic and alternative chrurches like: Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Assyrian Church of the East... All of them have similar claims about themsleves as Roman Catholic Church.

How do you discern between them?

I think what Gavin is getting at is there are a bunch of churches that say they’re the one true church, and all of them are mutually exclusive. Arguments on either side cancel one another out.

I never thought of that argument by Gavin and I gotta say he's right.

If you decided to become Catholic and not Eastern Orthodox, then you used private judgement to decide which was the true church. They both make claims be the church that Christ established.

It's called an ascent of faith and it's the Holy Spirit that must help us with that

the church is universal, whoever believes in Christ is saved

I can’t believe that the Protestant guy says that all who seeks god have no differences because we all have our personal private judgment, whooo weee then that sounds like we humans will decide our selves through our own personal beliefs and understanding of God that how we understand and believe in God from our own self judgement will be the right way to salvation oooohhhh oooohhh oooohhh which way do we go?🤔🙄

Do you not do the same? Did you use your personal conclusions of the scriptures to see that the Roman Catholic Church is the true church, or the that the papacy is true. Did you use personal conclusions of Church history as well?

This doesn’t negate ortlunds argument at all. You basically said it’s different for Catholics cause you think you’re right. Well you still came to that conclusion via private judgement. Ortlund never says that you have to understand and evaluate every doctrine of that church, but that it is personal judgement to join a given church. The fact that the Catholic Church is too complicated for any individual to understand is a downside of adding 2 millennia of extra doctrine.

Ummm... I don't fully affirm my churches doctrine. 1) As a newly formed Christian at the age of 48, good luck trying to find a church that's a perfect fit. I went through a spiritual crucible to get my heart aligned with God, and I'm still trying to figure out how best to serve Him. 2) I'm affiliated with two churches who are in desperate need of orthodox thinking. I can't turn my back on them and let them flail around in their heresy. 3) Very nearly all churches have built their theology around the Sethite worldview and the doctrine of original sin. The first is a heresy that ultimately diminishes the impact of what Jesus of Nazareth has done for us over the last 2000 years. The second is a heresy that denies our nature as imagers of God. That somehow we're born into this world in rebellion against God while at the same time being made in His image is talking out of both sides of our mouths, and it ignores the warning of St James about the use of our words.

I love all of the parts of Christ's body, and I'm willing to go to bat for any of us because in so much as we may be mistaken, our hearts are generally in the right place. There's a desire in my heart to place the Bishop of Rome into the broader position of Ecumenical Pontiff and bring the church into a federated union. You would think this could be easy since we're not allowed to have beef with anyone, but sadly, the scars are deep. The Orthodox church still holds the sacking of Constantinople against Rome even though the commanders of that campaign were punished for their transgression a thousand years ago, and the Protestants still hold the entire church of Rome accountable for the corrupt practices of a minority of priests five hundred years ago.

The issue I have with ortlands take here is the individual is deciding what God is commanding using ortlands standard LGBTQ affirming churches or pro choice affirming churches are just as valid as those opposed to those views resulting in one applying morals to a church and not a church holding people to higher morals. As well as doctrinal issues such as real presence and batismal regeneration the individual is deciding which doctrines are correct rather than the church binding doctrine to the individual.

The scriptures are revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. We aren’t supposed to hope our priest has the Holy Spirit, we are supposed to know He lives in us and so we can discern the truth of the scriptures

I got tired of drifting through protestant opinion. When I were protestant I was not of the same opinion as me a year ago. Since my conversion to the Catholic Christian Faith, I havent changed my opinion in 10 years, because my opinion is Catholic .. and its a rock.

If circular reasoning was a video. Why is the RCC the true church that Jesus established, because Jesus established the one true church which is the RCC, how do you know the RCC is the true church? Because….. I think y’all understand the point.

Your argument is Catholicism is correct because I say that Jesus says so. But that is the argument of every cult. The Mormons claim that they are right because God says so. As do the Muslims. How can we know for sure unless we have a standard to measure any claim against. That standard should be the Bible but Catholics reject the Bible as the only true standard, do they not?

This does such a disservice to Catholicism by establishing an argument for Catholicism on circular reasoning. Saying you don’t need to accept “every doctrine” because “it’s the Church established by Christ” is just making a circular claim. Is Christs establishment of the Church Catholic doctrine? Yes, therefore it must be accepted in order to believe the validity of the claim. I could make the same argument saying “Jesus Christ established the Church as Protestant” and then simply refer to this commonly held belief among Protestants to “refute” any claim or argument against any particular doctrine of the church or the belief in the Church itself as one’s own church to be a member of and participate in.
