I genuinely cannot believe a man his age is as coherent as he is. What a Titan 🙏🏼

“He’s got to want to do it” coldest part of the interview.

335 and left with 18. Crazy respect goes out to these old hard chargers.

My Grandpa was a flamethrower. He never talked about the war and he never missed a reunion with his Buddies. Both my parents are gone so I have his purple heart.

Flamethrowers are a different beast. The capacity for destruction combined with the pucker factor of strapping a bomb to your back is beyond crazy

"Didn't change your socks for 6 weeks"
As a Corpsman this has awakened a primal rage in me

335 to 18. THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE TO EIGHTEEN.
Only one single person who was trained to use a flamethrower alive. Just ONE.

Nightmare fuel.

This man is incredibly coherent, it's unbelievable. The strength within him is really something else.

Being a flamethrower guy back in the day had to be one of the single most terrifying job next to ball turret gunner and mine sweeper. Just an absolute fucking nightmare of a job

You didn’t change your socks for 6 weeks?
That reminds me of a joke I heard in the 60’s as a 12 year old…
A platoon was in a hellacious battle for weeks, without the opportunity to change/wash clothes…after 4 weeks the Sarge says” I got good news for you men….”TODAY, we are going to get to change underwear”…..he continues “So George, you change with Harold, John, you change with Herman, Albert you change with Melvin”……

RIP to all the departed Vets.

Met him in a grocery about 20 years ago. Talked for an hour. Wasn’t until 10 years later I found out he was a MoH winner. Very humble.

They did said in WW2 documentaries on PBS, that the flamethrowers, and the radio operators, did not last long.

My grandpa said the same thing, takes a certain kind of person to be able to use that. The screams and visions you go through, will leave its mark on your soul...period.

I was picked to use a Marine WWII Flamethrower in 1972, I still remember the heat and the thrust from the compressed air and fuel mix, they had one Marine behind me with a small fire extinguisher!
