We're in impacted communities across the North Island helping out with needs assessments for hard-to-reach communities, putting together and distributing food parcels, providing crucial psychosocial support. We’re also assessing where we’re needed most over the next week and looking at what we can do with partners, agencies, and humanitarian programmes to further support people in need.

Responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters is complicated and it takes a long time. For this event, recovery is expected to take years.

But, feeling hope is one of the five essential elements of the psychological first aid we provide to people in the aftermath of disasters and major events.
The outpouring of generosity, and the coming together of communities across the country that we've seen over the last few days shows us that Aotearoa New Zealand has hope for the future, that people have hope for those affected by the recent disasters, and that people have hope in us.
