In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

Frankly, I feel ashamed because I being a man, did a lot of those things that she mentioned. Now I cannot change the society but I can definitely change myself. At least, I will try to. And I will raise my son and daughter appropriately, as individuals.

As a 16 year old Afghan girl I really inspired by these speeches, first I read the book and then again I watched this, same issues are happening in Afghanistan. U can notice they are also deprived from education and work, it's not the first time, when the government was not from Taliban, we also had girls and women who couldn't do anything as a woman. Thank you for inspiring more and better 🥲❤😊

Once again, we get a chorus of ignorant dudebros crying their male tears of oppression after a feminist drops a whole ton of knowledge on them. Truth hurts, huh dudebros? Too bad. Deal with it.

Great job, Ms. Adichie!

My grandmother said there's no such thing as a man's either can do it or you can't. Period.

This is the best speech I have ever listened to. I am proud to be a woman, I am proud to be African. Thank you Chimamanda!

What i find funny is people commenting here that "feminists hate men" or "feminists want to be superior"... I mean, DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE VIDEO? wtf are you here for then? Haven't you got anything else to do besides hate on people fighting for equal rights?
Ignorance doesn't give you free ticket to talk shit on the internet. Google feminism, please.
And btw, keep in mind that feminism does favor men as well. Like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie beautifully mentions in the video, you are all expected to be the one with the money, or to be extremly tough, to an extent that anything as little as carrying your girlfriend/wife's purse on the mall can damage and put to risk your masculinity/sexuality (that was just an example okay)
Also, yes men are raped. But they are never blamed for it. "What were you thinking? Walking alone at that time of the night in a deserted street? You certainly wanted to get raped, (insert male name here)." THAT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU HEAR, although the other way around is pretty common.
Also, if men are raped, the shame in assuming it is SO HUGE that most keep it a secret. It shouldn't be, since it wasn't the victim's fault. Again, patriarchy implies that men being raped is shameful. "Why should he admit it, if it probably damaged his masculinity, anyway?"

Can you see where I'm getting at?
So PLEASE PLEASE people, get to know a movement before judging it.

"Marriage is a language of ownership rather than language of partnership".
It strikes me!

"you should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man" so true! I'm studying to be a lawyer and I once got told that I should get married before I qualify as an advocate because it will be harder for me to find a husband thereafter. Is that all my existence as a woman is reduced to? A wife? Not a woman who is able to be strong, independent and impact her environment? I would rather die alone, an accomplished successful lawyer, than submit to the patriarchal standards of my society, thank you very much.

At 16 I was told by a friend that no honorable man will marry me because I want to make a documentary on prostitutes . I told her that I don't want to marry a man whose fragile ego is more important to than what an entire segment of society is going through.

I've finally found someone who understands my anger. It really breaks my heart that a lot of women just accept that. As long as I am alive, I will keep fighting
