The Model Centre EXCLUSIVE - NER O Class (LNER G5) REVIEW! - 00 Gauge Model Railway

A review of the 00 gauge NER O Class (LNER G5) - an exclusive locomotive from The Model Centre!

When The Model Centre got in touched and asked if I'd be interested in reviewing their exclusive NER O Class, perhaps better known as the LNER G5, I absolutely jumped at the chance. This unusual 0-4-4T locomotive was commissioned by TMC and made for them by Bachmann - both highly regarded businesses who should know what they're doing right?

With a gorgeous NER lined green livery, I'll be taking a look at the No. 1759, a model of the new build G5 that is currently underway so this should be right at home on my heritage themed layout. This particular model is also sound fitted so I'll be giving you a full demonstration of the sound project as well as some interesting new features I haven't seen before on a model.

But ultimately it comes down to how well the loco actually performs. How well will the G5 run? Well all I'll say is I got a big surprise!

CORRECTION: Hi gang, in the video I said this was the first loco commission from TMC - what I meant was that the G5 is the first brand new loco tooling from TMC. They've obviously done lots of loco commissions in the past (and in fact were one of the first to do so) but this was their first wholly new loco tooling for a commission, rather than an exclusive edition of an existing model. Apologies for any confusion caused 😇

*For full disclosure: The Model Centre sent me this locomotive free of charge for the purposes of this review. I have not been paid for this review and I have been free to give my honest opinion on the model but please do bare this in mind while watching. As always, don't just rely on my opinions, make your own mind up from the close ups and as always I recommend checking out reviews from multiple sources.*

Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
00:54 - Specs
02:43 - Close Up Look
08:05 - First Test
09:49 - Sound Demonstration
12:48 - Running Session
17:00 - Final Thoughts

Thanks for watching 😃

I would buy the NER green version if I could find it reduced. It’s a pretty gorgeous model despite some of the issues.

It nice to finally have a new ner/lner branch line engine hoping for more like J21 or A8

I’ve been debating one of these but had not a great experience with Bachman in the past, not many reviews about

As a lner fan
I got one when they was released.
Bachmann know how to make a great pre grouping locomotive and liveries models
Keep safe ARP

What advice do you have on reviewing the performance of DCC fitted models? I tend to find that the performance will be a mix of the motor and the decoder settings.

That was a great review on a nice looking engine. Sure looks good running around your layout with those passager cars. Thanks for sharing.
GOD BLESS from America.

Hi, can you tell us what motor it uses please i.e coreless or 3 or 5 pole etc? Also suitable decoder for said motor. Thank you Alan

A great loco., but is it my imagination in that the rear pony wheels aren’t moving, or is it an optical illusion?

Nice but I won't buy one it's a bit dear for

Bargain. If you think otherwise you're looking a gift horse in the mouth.

That's a stunning loco, no doubt. Loads of separate detail. Remember when much of that would be molded into the boiler? Great runner, too. Looks wonderful on Pitley!

I do really like the Bachmann G5, and id like to get one, but for me, the price is way to high for me to justify purchasing it (part of the problem is that my layout is an LNER layout, but I know if I bought one id end up pushing myself to go for the NER one, therefore having a loco that is nearly £200, and doesn’t fit in with the rest of my fleet 🤣). The model looks really good, but seeing as I’m a little tight on money, and I’ve already made a few impulse purchases (I have a Rapido NER Liveried Y7 and LBSCR E1 in improved engine green on order…), I don’t think I’m willing to put out £189 for a tank engine, considering that I find that price is too high, even for most larger tender engine, and seeing as it’s an exclusive and I live in Canada I would also have to pay import fees and duty… overall, it’s a really nice model, but I don’t really see myself picking one up for those reasons. Great review!!

I got one of these last year when they came out.
And it was easily the best running loco straight out of the box, I had last year. It's such a good model.

Looks good and runs well but is it worth that

Ridiculous price! Never heard steps being described as "additional detailing" before - unless I misheard your commentary. I was also a bit confused by the 4 holes in the cab roof corners?

I must say the detail does look quite good, tho I dknt think I’ll be buying this as older locos aren’t my type but I must say, well done to Bachmann! Thanks for the great review!

I collect NER models and pre-ordered one of these. All we need now is appropriate NER clelestory coaches, preferablly with one as the auto coach for push pull operations.
