Home-made Garden Tractor & Mower

This is the tractor my dad made for me in about 1971. It has hundreds & hundreds of hours on it. It was recently overhauled & repainted. It started out with a 3 hp Briggs & Stratton, then it had a 6 hp Tecumseh electric start. That one was completely used up when the current 5 hp Briggs & Stratton was installed, I'm guessing around 1978.

It is based around a worm gear differential from a Shaw lawn mower, which was made in Kansas. It has a Crosley 3-speed transmission with reverse. Originally the Shaw had an automotive type clutch, but my dad fabricated a belt drive clutch system. There is a hand brake to stop the input shaft when shifting.

Other features: 6-volt lighting powered by a generator from a Cushman scooter. I fabricated the current exhaust with rain cap many years ago. Everything is original as dad made it with the exception of the lights (they have been replaced), and the seat (it has been made longer).

This is the second mower that has been used with it. I mowed our yard for years (over an acre) with the first one until it was completely shot.

I also have a trailer that my grandpa made for it which has hauled many kids and various loads over the years.
