I call it the "Pre-Crime Interview". I was downtown Phoenix and someone (he appeared to be homeless) approached rather boldly and asked me, "Hey man, what time is it?" I immediately think that if you're homeless, why does it matter what time it is? It's either light or it's dark. I was with my wife and a couple of other family members. I told him immediately, "BACK OFF!" and he did.

Another time, just recently, I was getting back into my work truck in a gas station parking lot. (I believe you've talked about gas station parking lots, Jason.) My truck is very clearly marked on all four sides with logo, company name, phone number, has ladder racks, etc. A guy (again, he appeared homeless) approaches me asking if I want to buy a cigarette. I'm wearing a company uniform, driving a clearly marked company truck...so it's obvious that I have a job. Is that the profile of someone that buys one cigarette off of a stranger in a parking lot? No it is not. Red Flag. I told him no, but he persisted. I then told him to "Back off". He still didn't get it. Then I yelled "BACK THE F%$@ OFF!". He raised his hands and backed away saying, "Hey man, be cool, be cool."

So yes, it does work. If it doesn't, then you know that it's time to go to the next level whatever that may be for your particular situation.

I've had someone tell me that it's not right to profile people. B.S. I profile all the time based on clothing, overall appearance, body language, etc. Profiling keeps you alive.

When you travel somewhere dangerous you always need to have your head on a swivel, because situational awareness is the difference between life and death.

You always keep a distance between yourself and strangers in public, and you always give yourself enough room at a stop light or stop sign to maneuver around the vehicle in front of you if you need to bail out.

As Jason showed in this video, if you need to give commands to someone approaching you, you need to do it LOUD, clearly and aggressively. You cannot ever appear to be week or hesitant. Your life depends on your demeanor.

Best advice I’ve seen yet. I’m an old, retired, police officer, and I’ve subscribed.

A "walker" saw me in my yard a while back. He changed course to approach me. At about 20 feet away I told him "That's close enough", he stopped dead in his tracks. Just by watching his facial expressions I knew he was thrown off. I told him "keep your hands where I can see them, away from your waist". He automatically lifted his shirt and spun around, so he already knew the routine. He half-heartedly gave his spiel. I told him that the police would be more equipped to help him with his predicament than I would. He didn't like that idea and left.

Good video. Just remember to check your six while the primary contact is possibly trying to keep you distracted.

I’m Marine Recon retired, and I will say the most important thing in assessing an approaching threat, is body language, look at the position of the hands, and look at the eyes, ( they might be very high), you’ll see it, and I agree with this man’s method, keep at least, a 4’ distance minimum. Be deliberate, never hesitate

Agreed. Better strangers think you're crazy than loved ones learn you're dead.

Another way to say it, is that criminals count on your good behavior (politeness) so that they can get away with their bad behavior.

Those people who walk around with headphones on wherever they go are sitting ducks

I always tell my siblings if you're walking down the street always walk fast as if you're late for work or something. I've seen many times muggers who pick pedestrians who walk casually as if they're tourists.

If you walk fast, muggers won't see any opening for a chit-chat. Even beggars are unable to catch up with you.

Thank you for this one. My wife travels to Las Vegas a lot for poker tournaments. She is all of 5'0" and 105lbs on a good day. This is a must watch for her.

Great tips.. Situational awareness.. It matters.. Yeah, I used to tell people I taught gun safety too that would ask what to do when some wild scenario was about to happen. I told them that I didn't allow them that close to me.. I used to live in Indianapolis when I was younger, and I to take the bus. The bus had to go thru the worst end of town and I never let people get too close to me, and I carried a gun! One time I had to put my hand on my gun to get a guy to leave me alone and he did so. My buddy was at a gas station and he had a guy come up to him and said he needed a ride, trying to car jack him or was trying to see what he could get away with and he pulled his shirt back and put his hand on his glock and the guy left.. Being armed is an equalizer.
This is great stuff for girls especially.. Yelling loud get back helps save them.
Great stuff Jason. It's really good stuff.. Yeah, I love learning from other peoples hard work. 😛
God bless you and your family kind sir!

My motto is don’t be nice: get loud. Dont walk up on me! Dont walk up on me! Say it loud as you can.

Only 40 people shot in Chicago last weekend. Seems like it’s slowing down! Crazy place.

I agree with almost everything you said except about escalating the situation. Sometimes like if its obvious someone is about to rob you, you need to show them your willing to escalate the situation especially if your dealing with people who are affiliated with a gang.

Jason, Most excellent short training episode, thank you. I work in DCtown, been approached many times, and typically blow through or reroute my direction with “active situational area awareness” while walking point A to point B. Thanks again!

Ignore your cell phone and headphones EVERY time you’re in public. Keep your head on a swivel.

Absolute fantastic advance...If the aggressor DOESN'T back away, one must always be prepared to protect one's self or family/friends. I am a proponent of learning to fight defensively in the first few seconds of a fight if the aggressor is intent to do us harm, and of the second amendment. You've provided invaluable advice on many these things on this channel and we thank you. I continue to recommend others to drop by and have a look at your channel as you provide clear instructions in a way that most can understand. Keep up the strong work and we look forward to your next vid.
