him only getting 10 years is crazy considering he'd been doing this for MORE than 10 years

i always heard about the “cult problem” in korea, with people kindly warning foreigners to be wary when travelling in korea. but i was approached by some korean students in manchester, uk who were from the world mission society church of god, who initially presented themselves as working on a uni project. they flattered me and complimented more than I had ever been before and ended up kindly inviting me to join them for dinner. it turned into trapping me in a cafe and telling me i must get baptised or I won’t be saved, and i must join them at their church that very evening. i had to hide in the bathroom to “escape”. it really does seem like a big issue, and i had no idea until that day how much it had spread to other places

I thought this wouldn't happen to me. I was approached by a cult member when shopping at target. They seemed super friendly and asked me questions about my religion. This girl took out her bible and talked to me about “god the mother” for 20 mins. Then she thank me for my time and asked me to join her bible study group on campus and gave me her contacts. I thought they were just nice people. I looked up their church and it was called the World Mission Society Church of God. It was a cult from South Korea. They were accused of trafficking women and often target people like me- female and in college. Chilling.

“Not even god will be able to stop me from doing this.” Full body chills. Everyone that stood up to him after such brainwashing is so powerful.

Whoever gave him that 10 yrs sentence should be ashamed for allowing that monster get out and assault more people again.

This case is so disgusting. I cant comprehend how this case has been going on for years without people noticing and how long the victims has been brainwashed. This case really broke my heart

I read that, in December 2023, he was given 23 years in prison by the district court
I hope this time they keep a closer watch on this monster, and won’t allow visitors - especially young girls

imagine you were in 5th grade and a teacher was doing a math problem and they said that 5 times 6 is 35. you probably wouldn’t even doubt it bc they’re the teacher, they’re never wrong right? imagine that you told them, ‘miss i think you mean 30’ and they told you no and that you were wrong. being so little and feeling like you don’t know as much as the teacher would make you start thinking that 5 times 6 was actually 35.
that’s kind of what happens to these people

I don't know if you will ever read this, but thank you for covering the subject with such grace. I am a cult survivor myself and saw someone recently make a video on the cult I was a member of and he was making fun of the victims. You have shown patience and understanding to the women in this cult, it has really touched my heart. Thank you

As a religious person, this is so disgusting to me and I hate when religion is used to justify taking away people’s rights.

Serial rape needs to be a life imprisonment sentence. You can't rehabilitate these monsters.

If you have ever been SAed. Do NOT watch the documentary. I have never been SAed and it was extremely upsetting. One of the most horrific scenes was when the Exodus member’s father was beaten in his car. The anguish the son experiences is heartbreaking. The father said he was just happy they attacked him instead of his son. Such a beautiful family.

What Stephanie said about anyone being a potential victim of a cult is so SO true. I had a scary super close call with a cult 3 years ago and they really know how to target you when you're at your lowest and feeling most vulnerable. Be safe everyone!

I felt it so much when Professor Kim's dad said he was glad it was him to be attacked and not his son. Parents would do anything to spare their children from suffering. I would rather it was me than my children even if I was suffering and disfigured for life or even died.

literally one minute after this is posted and have struggled to watch the netflix stuff about it but Stephanie always makes things a safe space while talking about traumatic real life stories thank you Stephanie for doing this

My dad’s a urologist and he and his other friends who are doctors notice that victims of sexual assaults end up having major health issues in terms of general pain and urologic issues. If you read the body keeps the score it makes sense. He never read that book but when he did exams he said he would suspect by a woman’s reflexes and injuries in the hips that these women were assaulting and when he would ask them they would tell him they had been assaulted or sexually abused as kids. There is a correlation between sexual abuse and medical issues and it’s heartbreaking. He said it’s devastating to see because it’s so deeply embedded in these women physically and emotionally as well as psychologically. They feel they can’t even trust their obgyn’s or urologists because of the abuse.

I feel awful for the victims. Cults are so scary. My mom belongs ro a church that supposedly "goes on dates" with Jesus. I call it a cult. I believe that is the correct label. Michigan has many cults....

wow, recently one of my favorite kpop groups, dkz, one of their members has been getting an absurd amount of hate for him being a victim of JMS cult and its so sad. he was basically forced into it since his family was always apart of it and he never realized how big it was an issue until growing up and seeing what the church did to him and many others. hes on hiatus now, but hes dealing with so much hate and has anxiety now and its so sad. he doesn’t even feel comfortable stepping foot outside cuz of the hate and it hurts because he was a victim and couldn’t fix it. thank you so much for covering this story Stephanie and educating not only me but so many others !

Believe it or not I encountered this in the US. I lived near a Korean church a few years ago in Virginia and I always wondered why there would be so many people walking outside the church at night but never dug in to it and minded my own business. One day on a Saturday, I was off work and was walking my dog, a sweet Korean lady (probably in her 40's) approached me and spoke Korean. I told her I was Chinese/Vietnamese and apologized for not understanding. She smiled, touched my arm and said "It's Okay" and asked me in English "Where do you live?" I told her not far but I am just walking my dog. She said "You are so pretty, have you had sex?" This caught me off guard and I just laughed and was like "You have a nice day" but she persisted and said "God can clean your sins". That was my queue and walk fast away from her with my dog. I always thought maybe she was trying to hook me up with her son or something but now learning about this....That haunts me.

Updating in 2024– He was sentenced to 23 years in prison. He was 78 at the time of sentencing. He will have to survive to the age of 101 to ever be free again.
