WordPress block editor: Top tips for making Gutenberg easier to use

The WordPress block editor, released with version 5.0 of WordPress in December 2018, brought about major changes in the way in which pages and posts are created.

For many, including me this brought a lot of frustration!

However, the block editor (named Gutenberg in development) has evolved a lot over the course of the last 18 months and there have been significant improvements and updates.

It is not perfect by any means, but nothing ever is. In this video I talk about some of the really interesting features that I have found over the last few months which have made editing WordPress content with the block editor easier.

I am sure I have missed some things so let me know in the comments below the best features that you have found or use.

Great video, Mark. Right down to the growls and groans with that menu popping up at the worst moment and in the worst place! Sounded like me a few minutes ago. Now I have a smug chuckle thanks to your help. The bar is now out of the way - at the top. Later Wordpress is slightly different. But your instructions were so clear and helpful it was easy to make small tweaks. Thanks to you, I can now focus on my work not on boxes popping up all over the place. Cheers.

Just started using Gutenberg a few days ago with ACF Blocks - these are useful tips thanks!

Very useful especially the breadcrumbs tip, haven't noticed those before, also pleased to see someone else has found it a fiddle to use I was starting to think it was just me.
It's a pity you can't switch on an outline feature to highlight where each group of blocks is and I'm still having issues with content not displaying quite the same in editor compared to the webpage, mostly position of content etc.
Also the preview has become a 2 click process which is annoying..but maybe there's a shortcut?
Hopefully the next update in December will resolve some of these..

Why did they go to Block Editor? The classic was so much easier. Did they do any User Testing?
