All graduates across all disciplines aspire to go for MBA nowadays. But is it worth it? Let’s consider the available options - not going for education and continuing with one’s job, the second option is going for a master’s program, and the third option which is now gaining popularity is going for MBA. I shared the drawbacks as well as the pros of doing a master’s or MBA. I shared two stories in this video.

The first is about my friend who completed his graduation in civil engineering and then went for a master's in civil engineering. But the drawback was that the pay in the whole civil engineering space is on the lower end. It means that even if my friend was an exceptional performer, there was a cap on how much he could expect to earn as a civil engineer. But this realization struck him after working in the civil space for 5-10 years. Then he went for an executive MBA and shifted to a techno-business role.

Another option is if you are from the electronics or computer science stream, you may hope to get a great package from the get-go. The second story is of a friend who did his masters in electrical engineering from one of the best universities in the US. After 10 years he is again trying to fill in an application for an executive MBA. Why? His point is that he doesn’t get a seat at the business decision-making table because of not having an MBA. Folks doing master’s face this specific problem that they don’t get to make business decision-making tables.

But there are many pros of doing a master’s. If your undergrad is in chemical engineering and you want to continue to work in the same field then it makes sense to go for a master’s. But the value of a master’s is closely linked not with the degree but with the university that you study in. So you can pay some money and go for an executive MBA right after a few years of doing your job, or you can also go for your master’s right after college. You can get an AI/ML role in some of the best and most valued companies across the world by doing your master’s in an allied field.

If you stick with your job, you will at least learn what you want to do in life - you will gain more clarity. In India people don’t often think much about their career goals during undergrad, it is only after graduation that we start thinking about what we want to do in life. So, if one does their MBA right after graduation, it doesn’t make any sense. So, one should work in their job only if they are learning something. Go for an MBA or Master’s if you hope to learn something over there. Jobs have their own pros and cons but it doesn’t hurt to wait another year before going for MBA or Master’s because in job you are at least making some money.

The advantages of doing an MBA are very clear. A lot more doors open for you after your MBA. One can go into product and consulting roles even with a design background after doing their MBA from a reputed institute. I had a high school teacher who jumped into consulting and a structural interior designer in my MBA batch. It makes a lot of sense to do an MBA if you want to make such a career shift. Long-term opportunities open up because of networking. MBA gives you the opportunity to network with a lot of professionals and intelligent folks in the business world.

There are several cons of an MBA too. The first is price. The cost of doing an MBA is shooting through the roof in the past years up until now. I shared the link to a video on top that should guide you on how to do your research about MBA. Hope you find this video helpful

Thank you for the insight Pawan . I’m a Data Scientist with a masters and an MBA . I’d like to pursue my phd in part time focusing on Generative AI . My ultimate objective is to create IP , independent consultation and to start my business in A.I based services. Could you please share your thoughts on whether phd education is still relevant and whether an entrepreneur can benefit from pursuing a phd ? I’d appreciate if you share any real life cases and make a video on that. Thank you.

I dont want a decision making position plus dont want to make huge investment in mba, my engineering degree is enough in itself rather if i do an mba than it would be difficult to get an shortlist from semiconductor companies for technical positions. Work culture is best in these companies in entire world. Teams are international. They are an institution in themselves. So I'm happy with no mba.
