It's confirmed! PM Narendra Modi will attend the BRICS Summit in South Africa. PM will travel to Johannesburg for the summit, which is slated to be held on August 22–24. The announcement comes after South African President Ramaphosa's phone call with the Indian Prime Minister. During the telephone conversation, Ramaphosa invited Modi to the summit, which the PM accepted and said he was looking forward to his visit. This comes as a surprise to those who expected that Modi would follow in the footsteps of Russian President Vladimir Putin and attend the summit virtually. The fact is that China tries to dominate the forum, which India does not want. Watch this report for more.

For the good of the global south, India and China have to try hard to resolve their issues and find some common ground.

Finally some positives from India. India can play such a big role in the envisioned BRICS. In reality, Yuan will dominate and it's a fact due to China's global position and soon world's largest economy within this decade. Russian ruble and India's rupee cannot take that role at the moment but since it's backed by gold standard, each country can trade in its own currency. But some international trade like shipping and exchanges will still need a singular currency for expediency purpose. I believe in the future, the five main currencies of BRICS can take that global currencies role. So it won't only be Yuan, but the BRICS $. a mechanism can be worked out. Putin should have more answers because he's been pondering this for more than two decades to overcome US$ and Swift banking exchange as a western weapon

Whatever might be the "reservations", as the official used, had PM Modi decided not to attend the BRICS summit it would have been a short-sighted decision of a mere politician as the statesmanlike Jawaharlal Nehru would never have disowned BRICS, if he was alive today and still the PM. I don't know why Modi's advisers don't realise that this is the perfect opportunity for discussing the introduction of a new currency removing the yoke of dollar hegemony, American parochialism and their hegemony in all spheres of politics, economics and international relations.. Perhaps Modi wants to take refuge under the American hegemony but, alas, India's growth through discounted imports from Russia, and the prospect, maybe a last refuge, of Russia standing as a mediator in the disputes between India and China, etc., would have badly affected India as America, our experiences show, cannot be trusted be in economic relations ( American business is always business and always one-way traffic, if you don't agree point out specific instances in which we benefitted economically despite giving huge orders to American companies ) and militarily ( during India-East Pakistan war in 1971 and their largesse of F-16, etc., are clear evidences that America doesn't want to see India grown and independent in all respects.
