On June 28th, 1787, Benjamin Franklin gave a short speech at the Constitutional Convention held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The speech seems oddly out of character for Franklin based on modern interpretations of the man and his religious views. The Convention was bogged down in heated debates on a multitude of topics including state representation in the legislature. Fears mounted that the convention would deadlock which could result in dissolution of the fragile union. It is at this point, Franklin gives his speech calling the assembly to daily prayer for God’s protection and guidance. This is also the origination of a piece of American folklore which will be discussed in the video.
