In this video we take a look at the famous bust of Nefertiti!
The bust is currently on display at the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany, where you can gaze into Nefertiti's one beautiful eye! But if you can't go to Germany for that, here's our video about it! 😁

Neferneferuaten Nefertiti, meaning "Beautiful are the Beauties of Aten, the Beautiful one has come", was a queen of the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, the great royal wife of the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten.

This life-like depiction of her was found in the ruined city of Amarna, and has fascinated people ever since!

I am German and had the good fortune of seeing the Nefertiti bust twice. Its beauty is truly mesmerizing! Everyone interested should be able to see it at least once. But sadly that's not possible. We cannot send the bust on a worldwide tour or something. That would be ridiculously dangerous both conservation- and security-wise. That's why I think giving it back to Egypt permanently is the best thing we could do. When you have to decide for one country the bust should be where it comes from. Where Nefertiti herself lived her life.

I came to this channel because of the Cleopatra controversy - love it. Nefertiti is awesome. It is so wonderful made. And it was made 2500 years ago. It demonstrates that ancient Egyptians were at least as skillful as us today or more. At that time Egypt was part of the Ottoman Empire - they didn't care to preserve anything, no value to them. So a lot of artifacts were "saved" from islamic barbarism (no offense). Legally what I can read it is clean that she is in Germany, as much as it can be. Being German I am in favor to give it back to Egypt. Egypt is not the same like 100 years ago. They are independent now and they take care of their heritage as much as they can. But they need international support.

Love this Egypt 101 channel. I was very interested in Egyptian archaeology in my much, much younger days. Pictures of this bust certainly fascinated me then and still do today.

In 8th grade, for Halloween, I wanted to go to my school's costume party as Nefertiti. My father made a headdress out of paper and glue, including a three-dimensional coiled paper snake on the front and painted it appropriately. I made a collar out of colored pasta strung on some yarn and my mother made a dress out of a white bed sheet to finish the costume. That was 64 years ago. I still have the headdress. It's pretty much in the same condition that it was in when he made it for me.

Difficult topic. Ancient art moved outside of its country of origin to all over the world can inspire many more people. Perhaps even to visit the country and culture it came from. Personally i think these museums should no longer own it but rent it instead (and pay the county of origin). Items that truly define a culture should move back, perhaps with a deal to return once every 5 or 10 years or so.

Museum exhibits frequently travel. Perhaps the answer here is for the bust to spend part of the time in Germany and part in Egypt. If the bust itself is a particular tourist draw, and fees are charged, these fees can be split between the museums (no matter which one is displaying it).

Definitely should be returned back to its motherland. Egyptian history belongs to Egypt 🇪🇬

Most of the artifacts of ancient Egypt fell victim to grave robbers and looters and would have ended up either being sold off to dubious people or even destroyed. Those rightfully obtained, like the bust of Nefertiti, should remain were they are. Egypt has given up the ownership and that´s that! In case of the Benin bronce artifacts, the story is different. Legally, you cannot obtain ownership of goods stolen, but see what just happened when they were returned. Instead of being displayed in the museum that Germany paid for being built, they disappeared in the koffers of a member of the ruling family to be sold to those bidding the most. So many African countries have a rather careless attitude twords their own histoory and culture that I thin returning artifacts is debatable.

Ancient history is the shared story of all humanity, it belongs to everyone. I don't care where ancient artifacts like the bust of Nefertiti reside so long as they are safe and secure, preserved to the highest possible standard and accessible to any who wish to view them.

WOW, Fox! This new channel is amazing! The amount of new information you give, the way you explain things, the originality of your thoughts ... I just love all of this! I hope this channel grows as it deserves!
I am not sure if the bust should remain in Germany or give back to Egypt ... after all there was an agreement and if the archeologist Borchardt didn't do the excavations maybe it would have never been discovered. So with this premises maybe it has the right to remain in Germany ...

Dang that thing is beautiful. I love the elongated neck.

As for were it belongs. I generally think artifacts should remain where they currently are unless it is in danger. What is most important is the preservation of our history and that means keeping these ancient pieces in stable environments. The sins of our fathers matter nothing compared to the education of our children.

Well, Egypt was not a German colony. There was an agreement. Why should it not belong to Germany? If a German bought a house in that period in Egypt should he also lose his property. That kind of discussion leads to nothing. A completly another story would it be when they robbed it.

I think Germany has a sort of "right" to keep it. We can't go undoing all past treaties and deals just because we wouldn't make them today. That said, I also think it would be magnanimous (and a great PR move) for Germany to return it to Egypt. Would love to see that happen.

Germany should return the statue as a sign of respect. At least, I would love to see it.

I guess an issue could be who did the work and who paid for the cost of the excavation? If only the German team did the work and they paid for all of the costs, I can see why they think they have a claim. Also, you said there was some paperwork that almost seemed like a contract that the Egyptians signed. Of course, it could have be signed under coercion. Just because the Germans did the work doesn't mean the Egyptians were in favor of if being done at the time and in that manner. Did Eygpt get their first pick on what items would go to who? If not, I can see why they might be angry because these artifacts are part of their history. In the case of this, I think either an international court should decide or just be decided by the parties involved since I'm an American. My couintry is less that 250 years old. Your country has been around for 10, 000s of years. Great question.

What feels like it's British, but isn't? The contents of the British Royal Museum!

I'm a big ol' lefty and that's definitely contributing to my opinion here, but, I think that any artifacts taken from ancient sites while a nation was under the rule of another nation is suspect. History has shown that museums have tremendous collaborative capability, and artifacts "owned by" their home culture can reside in other museums, travel the world in exhibitions, and so on. Similarly, faithful replicas can be produced that can offer the experience of the artifact to a wider audience, too.

Thanks for the video, I love the new channel!!

Perhaps shared custody? ... I think a good well move from Germany to have it present for the grand opening of the GEM would be an awesome move, if at least temporarily.
