James O'Brien on those who elected the red wall MPs that've now turned on the PM.

'I think you voted for the idea that Boris Johnson could be trusted and Brexit was a great idea - both of which have been completely exploded by reality.'

If you vote for a clown, don’t be surprised when you end up with a circus.

What surprises me is that it's taken so long for them to figure out how bad he is along with the rest of the tories

My brother voted for Boris because "do you honestly think Corbyn would do better?" Me and my sis- YES anyone would be better!

James as another Scotsman I too have difficulty working out what on earth these people were thinking about.

I listened to every word of that, agreed with each and every syllable and yet, at the end, felt the same mixture of sadness and despair as I did at the outset. As for my neighbours, here in Hartlepool, who voted Tory/Johnson/Brexit please can you hold your hands up and begin to consider the idea that you may have been comprehensively (and willingly?) duped.

Firstly, I don't live in the UK these days, so can only evaluate from afar. Perhaps I've misread the mood etc. - but here's how I see things.

A lot of people have criticised Starmer for not making a bigger deal of Brexit negatives. But I've long said focusing on Brexit won't help Labour - not least because many of their "traditional" supporters will feel alienated. And it gives Johnson a great platform to keep shouting about Brexit - and, let's face it, as badly as Brexit has gone, it's such a divisive topic that many Leavers will never admit it. And, as the poster-boy for Brexit, Johnson will always remain a hero to some people.

By generally steering clear of Brexit, it's starved Johnson of oxygen - to the point the Brexit beacon has largely been extinguished. Had Brexit been given more oxygen, I'm convinced Johnson would currently be defending himself by pointing to his record of "getting Brexit done" - in much the same way he's tried to point to the UK's record on vaccines (which isn't as great as he's making out) to try and deflect from all the scandals swirling around right now.

The reality is, by keeping Brexit at a distance, it's exposed Johnson and the Tories for what they really are: incompetent, corrupt, selfish politicians, unable to run the country, and with little regard for those they are meant to represent.

I'd love to see these questions put directly to those Tories in red wall seats in front of a camera. Would be fascinating.

As a scotsman, I'm loving him. He's currently the best argument for independence. And If I was Scottish torrie leader, I'd be distancing my party from the shambles South of the wall 🤣🤣🤣

I don't think this MP would have done it, unless he sensed that his own constituents hadn't already completely turned their back on a Conservative government, that they had no sane reason to be voting for in the first place...

Let the bodies pile high, remember that. Boris certainly did let them pile high. And he still had a smirk on his smarmy face.

It was to get Brexit done. It was a ridiculous reason. My dad had never voted conservative before. But now is a converted conservative. I am just glad the area is labour. It is hard for me to talk to him.

They voted for him so they deserve every frustration coming to them

Spot on. That's what they voted for. Thick as two short planks. We all have family members who drank the "fizzy pop".

Superb.
I’d dearly like James to enlarge on the exact, precise reason he was made to leave the BBC.

I truly am in despair at how this country is being run we need a general election every 3 years as Australia have
5 years is too long and if a pm resigns there should be an automatic general election the replacement should not be installed as pm straight away
this country is slipping into an autocracy from a democracy we need to change this corrupt government who care more about their own careers and not the country

It is mind boggling how low the British political system has sunk and delivered the disaster that is Brexit and this clown and his government! It can only get better from here, one would hope!

As one of Mr Wakeford’s constituents I wholeheartedly welcome his move. So refreshing to see an MP who puts his principles ahead of personal advantage
