Few Hollywood stars are as iconic and with such a successful, long, and storied career in film and television as the irreplaceable Elizabeth Taylor. She first made a name for herself as a charismatic young horse rider on National Velvet. She was only 12 years old. From there, Taylor went on to become one of America’s most memorable sirens, as well as a highly accomplished, award-winning actor. In the 1940s and 1950s, she starred in blockbuster productions like Cleopatra and A Place in the Sun. Not only that, she managed to accumulate an impressive collection of eight husbands, had four children, and was the face of numerous charitable organizations.

But Elizabeth Taylor’s life wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Behind the scenes, she was plagued by health concerns. She was born with scoliosis, a debilitating disease that causes curvature of the spine. This was the cause of her lifelong back pain. And remember how her eyelashes always looked so incredibly lush? This was because Taylor had a rare genetic disease that caused her to grow an extra set of lashes. Sadly, the condition leads to ingrown hairs, and she had to undergo numerous surgeries to remove them. She fell off a horse during the filming of National Velvet and had to have spinal surgery. And when just a young woman, Taylor was almost left blind when a rusty splinter became embedded in her eye.

The enigmatic star was prone to respiratory infections, which at least three times in her life developed into life-threatening pneumonia. In the most severe case, in 1990, Elizabeth Taylor was hospitalized for weeks and had to be put on a ventilator to keep her breathing. Taylor has actually had over one hundred surgeries during her almost eight decades on this planet, including brain tumor removal and hip replacements. She even ended up in the Betty Ford Clinic a few times, where she was treated for drug and alcohol addiction. In fact, that’s where she met her seventh husband, construction worker Larry Fortensky.

It’s hard to believe this beautiful talent has left us. My older brother was very lucky to meet her in person, and get her autograph. This was during the time she was having lunch with Richard Burton at a cafe in New Mexico. They were both friendly, and happily signed an autograph for my brother. According to my brother, Elizabeth Taylor was the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, and her violet eyes were especially captivating.

I never liked her before. Now I love her. She is an inspiration for my many health issues. She’s been operated on 100 times. I’m only at 12, but I’m looking to catch up a little this year. I can sum her up in one word: Backbone.

She had an amazing career considering her numerous medical problems. She should have remained drug and alcohol free after her first time in the Betty Ford Clinic. She will be remembered for her perfume, her beauty, her ability to keep coming back, and of course her great talent as an actress! May she rest peacefully in God's Kingdom.

My favorite movie of hers was National Velvet. I was in grade school and would pretend to be sick (to stay home) to watch that movie. We didn't have "recoders" then. We only had a weekly TV guide and I would look for movies I wanted to see ahead of time.

Favorite liz Taylor role was wife of rancher Bic Benedict (Rock Hudson) in Giant. Love the movie and Liz going from hopeful happy bride of 20 to a graceful smart woman in her 50s. Think the movie is a classic epic that covers an amazing period of American history between to 20s and the 1950s.. Have watched it many times and will again. Movie also starred Rock Hudson, James Dean, Mercedes Mc Cambridge.

I read around the time of her death that she sufferered from Lupus. We share symilar names and the challenges of living with this disease. When younger I had ingrowning eye lashes. Numerous surgeries, damage to my different body parts, difficulty staying pregnant & nearly dying at my first and last baby's biths. Pneumonia, chronic fatigue, rashes, and the list goes on. I admired the fact that she fought it and managed to continue her career even though it risked her life. Because of her wealth she was listened to by the medical community something that a lot of Lupus surferes in lower economic brackets, could not get. Even now it can be a hard struggle to be taken seriously. She was beautiful & talented, and a great fighter, to survive so many attacks to her body by her body.

The Taming of the Shrew. She made Shakespeare sound like conversation. She more than held her own with veteran stage actor Burton. I think she smoked everyone on screen with her performance. She was funny and touching and brilliant. ❤️
