But Elizabeth Taylor’s life wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Behind the scenes, she was plagued by health concerns. She was born with scoliosis, a debilitating disease that causes curvature of the spine. This was the cause of her lifelong back pain. And remember how her eyelashes always looked so incredibly lush? This was because Taylor had a rare genetic disease that caused her to grow an extra set of lashes. Sadly, the condition leads to ingrown hairs, and she had to undergo numerous surgeries to remove them. She fell off a horse during the filming of National Velvet and had to have spinal surgery. And when just a young woman, Taylor was almost left blind when a rusty splinter became embedded in her eye.
The enigmatic star was prone to respiratory infections, which at least three times in her life developed into life-threatening pneumonia. In the most severe case, in 1990, Elizabeth Taylor was hospitalized for weeks and had to be put on a ventilator to keep her breathing. Taylor has actually had over one hundred surgeries during her almost eight decades on this planet, including brain tumor removal and hip replacements.
