VIDEO ESSAY:
Christopher Nolan and Andrei Tarkovsky are more similar than you think. Two directors you wouldn’t usually hear in the same sentence are compared in this video essay through a similar theme in their films: the exploration of time through film.
Christopher Nolan has explored time through his films Inception, Interstellar, Memento, and Tenet, studying its mechanisms and playing with its rules and forms. Whereas for Andrei Tarkovsky, time has always been the most important element of cinema, which he explains through his book Sculpting in Time.
But whereas Christopher Nolan’s methods are explicit, Andrei Tarkovsky’s are implicit.
