Great video! I was stumped for a little while on how to properly set up the surface for the contours to be placed on the lines, but somehow got it by trial and error. Seeing how to turn the precision down and the line was also very helpful. Thanks!

Thanks for the positive feedback! i am glad i could help out a fellow civil 3D user. Let me know if there are any other tutorials you want to see.

Thanks for posting this video. I was really stuck and this helped tremendously.

the only way to get truly random labels, is to select "contour - single" and start clicking away on the contour lines. for the second part of your question, you could choose "contour - multiple at interval" and drag across only ONE contour line, then specify the distance between labels i.e. 50. also remember that when you create multiple labels at intervals, once they are created, they are no longer grouped so you can delete individual labels or move them separately.

The contours are just a visual part of the surface. The only way you can
separate the contour lines from the surface would be to export the dwg
using the "export to autocad". This will strip the civil 3d surface to
basic autocad object.

when you have a big surface area to label, how do you label the contours randomly so that its not on a line you draw. I want to label contour elevations at various distance apart (not interval). say a contour line elevation 100 will have labels at every 50 feet along the length of the contour line elev. 100

I am practicing creating contours from surface. But after creating the contours and displaying them, its seems like its just a layer and not part of the drawing yet. How do you save the contours into a drawing so you can actually work with the contours lines? when i export the drawing to a DGN, the contours are all grouped together and i can't click on individual contour lines.

After exporting the dwg, the contour lines are grouped together and can not be selected individually. Do you have to explode the contour lines, break them? This also happens when I open the exported dwg in microstation.
