One interpretation I have come up with is that expressing oneself is usually a very painful process. See how he shears chunks off of his face to reveal what is inside and let it pour out; otherwise, he would have remained practically faceless. The liquid that pours out is not tears; it is colorful. It is all emotions that the person feels.

Also notice how at first the face is contorted and the eyes and mouth settle later as he proceeds.
