How tariffs work and how they can impact trade

The United States has been throwing tariffs on different items for months now, but what are they?

Consumers pay. If consumers were buying foreign product then they did so because it was cheaper or it was better than the domestic product. With a tariff the price gets passed on to the consumer if they choose to keep buying that foreign product. So either consumer pays the tariff, or they are forced to buy the domestic product that was higher priced and/or inferior. Either way the consumer is worse off than before.

You said there’s two types of tariffs “specific and Ad valorem” then you said “ the latter..” then described the former. Former is the first one you mention and latter is the second one you listed…

But if country A is selling to country B how does it cost them money to sell it? Why can't anyone just simply say who's paying who? Who are they paying the tax to? Country B? Then why does it sell for more in country B? Stop with the fluff and just simply say who's paying what to who.
