This is exactly what I needed to see! My Labrador puppy is nipping and chewing like crazy

Such a good insight: a puppy has a strong natural need to jump, nip. Therefore it is not intrinsically bad, it has a place, so meet the need, help them to satisfy the need in an appropriate way. Thanks.

This is so true! We started sending our little guy to doggie daycare, in addition to setting up an outdoor tug, using hand held tugs, giving bully sticks and his meals frozen in kongs. He just turned 9 months and these interventions are making the “pulling your hair out” phase bearable, even enjoyable. 😊

I’m really enjoying your videos. There’s not many trainers that I can get so much good info from. I really agree with you on this one, it’s so important to let the dog be a dog and give them outlets for all the puppy behaviours:)

My Pyr has bully sticks, yak cheese chews and sometimes rawhide rolls always available to her. (She wasn’t a fan of the Kong toys.) She has never chewed anything of ours. We’ve had her almost 3 months, and haven’t lost a shoe. No furniture damage. Nothing. Huge fan of this method. I’m happy, and she’s very happy.

So true Joel!
Puppies need time with other appropriate dogs!
Chewing & Jumping is a phase that every puppy goes through.... and these practices help guide puppies through it!

Bless you. As many others have said. You're 1 of the few ppl giving advice to (I guess) the outliers who aren't able to be helped by all of these other channels who primarily preach nipping is natural, don't get mad at them, & give them a chew toy to redirect. They don't discuss aggressive chewers, constantly being used as a chew toy by your dog (esp bigger & stronger breeds), being aggressive with the amount & type of chew toys you give them. So TY!

But I have 2 seniors. They hate it when my pup jumps on them. I’m often separating them & protecting the elders.

Excellent video and advice. And for this reason I like to have 2 dogs. My young beagle and my elderly rottweiler play tug of war often... and the rottie could "win, " but he doesn't, he just keeps playing

I thought I hit the jackpot with Lola because she never had a nipping or chewing issue when she went through teething.. lol the only thing she destroyed was a pair of my old slippers. Turned out I was just doing the right thing accidentally. I always made bones for her to eat because I thought the marrows are great for her growth during puppy stage. I also socialized her right away, and my neighborhood had many adult dogs who didn’t like her jumping on them, and some even corrected her!

Thanks for the reminder about frozen kongs! Used antlers and bones for over a year until one of our dogs kept getting little pieces stuck in their throat. Did a google search..we're lucky we didn't have a vet bill or tooth repair..I had no idea antlers and bones were dangerous. We only use Kong toys now. Not as enticing..Will freeze goodies inside. Bully sticks are hard on our dogs digestion so we try to avoid them.
