Mo Rocca talks with Guy Howard-Willis, the inventor of the Manta5 Hydrofoil Bike. The Hydrofoil Bike can ride on the water by using foils — winglike structures — to lift the bike above the water. The Manta5 Hydrofoil bike is the first hydrofoil watercraft of its kind that can perform a submerged launch — a launch performed when already in the water. Although the Manta5 can be used by just pedaling, it also has an electric motor assist for less intensive cycling.

It sells for $9000.00. I can get a jet ski for much less.

Anything can be made to look promising in a commercial. I, for one, am not convinced of this design. The truth is, it takes an incredible amount of energy to lift a 160-lbs man out of the water and keep him above it. That energy has to come from somewhere - either you'll be doing the workout of your life, or the battery will be doing it for you and it'll run out of juice in no-time doing it. If you were to change the pedals out with a diesel engine and ensure that no water gets into the air-intake, then you might have a viable design idea that's worth prototyping and testing.
