As a Dominican (From puerto plata), I know that most of the sellers tries to sell stuff a higher price than a Dominican could buy. I know that this is a way for them to make money, but to be honest I don’t like at all the way they want to sell as if it’s an obligation for the tourist to purchase, they want to show that they are friendly but they just want your money.
There are necklaces or t shirts that tourist are buying for more than $5 and $15 dls when they can get it at $2 or $5.

Yesterday I was with my mom buying a coconut because I also want to sell them on the beach as I need the money, but needing the money doesn’t mean that I must abusive other’s money because the money is not on a tree that everyone can get it easily, so the reason of the story is because I was talking to an old lady (the one selling the coconuts) and she told me that there people selling coconuts at $5 dollars (for the tourist) when she only sells her coconuts for $1, so she advised me to sell them for $10 and my reaction was sad, I want everyone to take advantage for the same lower price.
I’m thinking about other natural drinks that I can prepare by-myself but my point is that everyone is comfortable and they can also see that not everyone wants to see them as a fool.

A few months ago I went to the Central Park with my best friend and a German man started talking to us and asking about a closer bank where he could change his money to Dominican pesos, the thing is that we started guiding him and during that time many people were looking at us as we were about to take money of him or we are just 2 girls that are with him just for s3x, others from different restaurants were inviting us to take a look, I was extremely impressed and also angry because our intention was only to help this man. At the end we just went to the supermarket so he could buy some food and also change the money but before we could say good bye, he was asking me another thing and a Taxi man that was in the supermarket he just started talking to this man and I was like “I didn’t ask for your opinion”, these drivers wants to be empathic or funny, friendly to take the money. So, keep your eyes open and you can feel the vibration of the ones that are respectful and wants you to feel another human being, a person that wants you to feel like you want to come back because you were given the best and unforgettable experience.

Be careful when leaving the airport. There are porters (airport employees with badges) that will literally grab your bags out of your hands and say they are there to escort you to your taxi. When you get to it, they will insist on a tip.

Here’s what to do for the camera dropping scam. As you hand back the camera, don’t let go of the strap if it has one. This way, when they let go, it will swing harmlessly in the air. Then you can laugh as you lay it on the floor next to them while giving them the finger.

We arriver to Punta Cana and saw exchange place on the street - looked like little cottage with a sign on it. We gave the guy $100 and wanted pesos . The guy ( older man) took our $100 and said he will come back with pesos. He ran somewhere and me and my friend were waiting for him like 3 min. Then i said to my friend “ i think we just lost $100 🤬”. But 2 min later the old man showed up with the pesos in his hands. So he was REAL money exchanger 😃😃

I remember when I was in Punta Cana and there was this one very charismatic fellow on the beach who tried to offer me cheaper tours then the resort offered, saying how he works for the company that provides the buses and boats. But what made me suspicious was when he said there is a 80$ downpayment and refused to take any alternatives.

Been to DR from Canada 3x. My experience is you will encounter aggressive people at the airport insistent on taking your bags for you for a fee - just be stern and even rude and decline the offer - they will eventually move on.

I always make sure to book a package that includes transportation from the airport to the hotel (and back).

At the resort you may encounter people trying to sell you stuff (usually on the beach) -- if not interested just ignore them and if that doesn't work just be persistent that you are not interested. Don't make the mistake I made one time of making up a name and saying I will think about it as every day they saw me, called out that name and said want to buy. It was more annoying than anything.

As others have said - don't bring anything with you that you are not willing to part with - and also don't be flashy with your money or expensive items (cameras, jewellery, etc). Stay as low key and invisible as possible.

as a native Dominican, i can truly say that this video is 100% accurate.

the most important tip is to always have small bill denominations, and don't be too flashy or have large amounts displayed when executing a transaction.

i see it way too often where tourists tend to open their wallets and i get to see their dollars and pesos in one spot. EVERY place here takes pesos, so you shouldnt feel the need to carry dollars as well....

if you think you may run out of pesos, i would recommend maybe stashing 5o or 100 dollars, to change....but there is NO NEED to carry dollars as any alternative.

Good advice here and duly noted. I am a Nuyorican, have never been to Puerto Rico...promised my daughter when she graduated nursing school I would take her there to visit where family came from...she graduated years ago, we never went. I asked if I could go...she said not without her. She has babies now so she can't go...Anyway, short story long...I chose the DR for my next vacation destination as it's the closest I can get to Puerto Rico without stepping on it's soil. I have traveled to several destinations in Mexico, and Colombia as well. Yes, one must be careful, leave your fancy jewelry home and keep that phone hidden.

Quite helpfull, i lived there and visited many times and fell into few of these minor things in past. Now it wont work anymore for them, they tend to leave you alone if they understand you speak spanish little and lived there.

My best rule is the following : Never bring anything to the DR that you really care about. I bought cheap shoes, cheap wallet, cheap sunglasses, cheap watch, etc. I could lose them and not care. You will get ripped off in the DR if you stay long enough.

As a Dominican I've noticed when I went to Santo Domingo or any where such as hotels, shops etc... There was these tourist on the zoo and aquarium and I've notice that every single forineer had to pay 2 or 4 dollars extra than everybody else.
