“GALATEA”

Poetic proof that one can master English and produce high literature in it only if he/she has an excellent command of Greek both linguistically and culturally due to the ecumenical contributions of the latter.
GALATEA

Are there reigns to grasp within me,
So to harness you, my soul?
For your gallop so does tease me,
Filled with Eros’ echoing call!

How your impetus is boundless,
With infinities of thought!
Though my fiery dreams are countless,
In real life they come to naught!

Our mortal flesh is your attire,
Just alluring in our primes.
And though we longer treks desire,
We pause far from dreamy climes!

Whilst the gods hold lavish banquets
And with wine douse down their food,
We peck crumbs, discarded crumpets,
With just time enough to brood.

How we long for timeless beauty!
Flawless flesh and love we seek!
But Old Time collects Ηis booty
Spoiling all that’s godly Greek!

This is what Pygmalion* prompted,
This uncompromising youth,
To on marble he adopted
Chisel ageless Beauty, Truth!

Though inferior the marble
To the cosmos we desire,
We may also sculpt our marvel
so “Galatea” may transpire!

Oh, Galatea, milk-white princess!
Gracious, noble Grecian light
Yours has rendered Beauty peerless
Warding off all worldly blight…
