2:34 - Chapter 3
3:22 - Chapter 4

In this video, we talk about a big problem in cybersecurity jobs that many people face, there is often no training for beginner roles. It can be really hard to get hired without any work experience, even for entry-level jobs. What makes it even harder is when these jobs ask for years of experience but offer no training to help you get that experience. This issue is something many people struggle with, and we need to talk about it more.

The cybersecurity field is growing fast, and there are a lot of job openings. But it can feel impossible to get started when companies want you to have skills that you can only learn by doing the job. But how are you supposed to get that experience if no one is willing to train you?

This video is meant to shine a light on the reality of trying to get into the cybersecurity workforce. We also explore some possible solutions and strategies that might help people deal with this tough job market. We understand that the lack of training for cybersecurity jobs can be really frustrating, and in this video, we explain why this happens and what can be done to fix it.

It’s definitely the Wild, Wild, West navigating this industry and what it takes to succeed. Sort of feels like being given a new, shiny Sig Sauer and told to do your best shooting without ever having specific range experience. You truly have to have the smarts to figure it out on your own and make it work doing the training in the process

Your analogy makes a lot of sense. I quit my previous job because the company dumped a massive project in my lap that absolutely nobody had experience with. It was my first job out of college, and I felt like I was intentionally being set up to fail. Wish I watched this video before quitting that job. Would have helped me realize they’re paying me to connect the dots myself, not follow some predefined formula. 🤔

I find that those who lack creative problem solving capabilities are the ones that have the most difficult time internalizing this message of instilling confidence in someone else knowing you don't have enough of the particular experience they are looking for but saw something that was good enough to get a pass on. Usually those the people who say you must focus only on getting a regular college degree and nothing else. I learned this early on and with a different job I showed that with a integration for an ecommerce store project I did and got a job with Meta doing that for a while during the pandemic. Same thing, just be ok in speaking confidently how that would translate to what they want.

To be honest, this logic can be placed in many IT positions. Where I work, the systems admin and his predecessor had to research their way into doing the tasks they were given. They didn't have formal qualifications to do that particular role but their experience, tools, and skills needed to figure it out carried them a long way. They learned on the job. In fact, once they were asked how they complete certain things. Their answer? "I googled it!" They could have been overwhelmed but they managed to figure it out. If I was to ever take over, I don't know if I could stay afloat like they did.

You did a good job at explaining the concept of experience doesn’t have to be a 1 to 1 for every job. Sure it helps but aptitude triumphs all.

Lab concepts, practice concepts, master concepts from basic to intermediate to advanced repeatedly, putting it in your resume, getting the job and doing it all over again.
