In the battle for dominance in the clean energy vehicle market, electric vehicles (EVs) are experiencing rapid growth. By 2023, the share of electric cars in total sales surged from 4% in 2020 to 18%, with global EV sales expected to reach 14.1 million units—a 34% increase from 2022. In the first quarter of 2024, EV sales exceeded those from the same period in 2023 by approximately 25%. Leading the fast-growing EV sector are companies like Tesla, Ford, Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and BYD.

However, the future holds uncertainty for today’s top automotive brands, as new, more advanced vehicles are being developed to potentially replace them. One such vehicle is the Tesla Model Y, which became the best-selling car in the world in 2023, surpassing all internal combustion engine vehicles as the first electric vehicle to achieve this milestone. By June 2024, Tesla had sold 1.2 million units of the Model Y, overtaking the Toyota Corolla.

Yet, Tesla’s hold on this title may be short-lived, as Chinese automaker Xpeng has revealed a new car intended to compete with and possibly surpass the Tesla Model Y and other competitors like the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Audi e-Tron, and Volvo XC40. The new contender in the crossover electric SUV market is the Xpeng G6, a vehicle boasting more aggressive styling than its rivals, a longer driving range, fast charging capabilities, and enhanced technological features.
