The coffee guy seems to know him best, hes like the only one that doesn't actually insult him, just tells it like it is.

This is the main reason why I like Emmett so much rather than a character who cannot fit in, his problem is that he cannot stand out, he was so committed to having everyone like him and playing it safe he’s basically become an unrecognisable cog in the system one that could just be replaced with another without a second thought indistinguishable from the thousands of other cogs that make the machine work. But throughout the course of the movie he learns that he can be more than that that anyone has the right to make themselves special

when I saw this movie as a kid, I thought that they had fabricated that footage and were lying to Emmet to make him crack. Now that I'm older I now realise, "No, people are really like that in the real world."

The average middle to high school experience as an introvert.

I can sorta understand how Emmet feels, though. Trying to fit in so hard with everyone else, liking whatever they're interested in...only to find out that they don't really care about you due to you acting like a yes-man instead of just having unique traits or having anything special about you.

To them, you're nothing more than a blank slate.

This is legitimately my worst fear... people I consider my friends not even hating me but barely even registering that I exist.

I like how they go into great detail about how little they care about Emmet for basically no reason

Emmett's "Told you I was a nobody" hits me like a truck. It felt like he was on the verge of tears, but the more he thought about it he recognized why people felt that way about. Like he knew in the back of his mind that the people around him felt that way, but he was able to shove those thoughts to the side until he heard them just flat out say it.

It's sad he starts losing his smile

When I was young and Bad Cop showed him that, I always had the idea that Bad Cop or Lord Business wiped their memory of him because Gale didn't know who they were talking about. Now I understand.

It took me 10 years to realize how hard this hits…

It's even sadder in the second movie when he spends who knows many years stuck inside a dryer waiting for his friends to save him.

Maybe it wasn't just the fact everybody kept telling him to grow up, it's also all the loneliness in his life he had before he became the special.

Emmet truly is a tragic hero

this is such a painful scene because they don't dislike him, they're not even trying to be mean, they're just telling the truth. they're not wrong, he doesn't have enough unique traits to socialize any further than a brief hello when he shows up. surfer guy puts it best 0:59

This movie has so many deep meanings when you look on the inside. It’s not about building legos

This is worse than being bullied imo. At least then, the bully would care about you

The insane thing is they aren’t really wrong, Emmet goes so out of his way to fit in that he ends being the most generic citizen in the city. There’s even a scene where you find out Lord Business can’t track him because of how generic his face is.

Best / worst part about it is; everyone they asked weren't saying that to be mean. There was no malice, no hate, no attempt at being a bully behind it. Emmet really was just a blank slate. a nothing. Try so hard to fit in with everyone, and you end up fitting in with no one. You gotta find your own niche, your own passions.

Growing up is realising the truth about our favourite childhood movies. This one hits different though after realising.
