Okayyy so I’ve watched this animatic seventy times now so I think it’s due time I do a lyrical breakdown in the comment section as to why “Hit Me Baby One More Time” is the perfect song for this scene.

Here we go:

*Oh baby, baby, how was I supposed to know that something wasn't right here?* - Raph spent the entire movie trying to convince Leo to take things seriously, something he’s never learned because he’s never had to be the leader before. But now that everyone is in trouble, he knows what Raph meant.

*Oh baby, baby, I shouldn't have let you go and now you're out of sight* - Leo references Raph sacrificing himself to save him earlier, leaving himself behind. Leo blames himself for “letting him go.”The real Raph, buried underneath the Krang’s control, is now “out of sight” because of Leo.

(This is the point where Raph joins in, so now the lyrics apply to both of them)

*Show me how you want it to be* - Leo is asking Raph for his guidance. Unlike before, he is now ready to learn from Raph how to be a better leader. Raph starts singing back this line because he wants Leo to show him how to get his humanity back.

(Crucially, Mickey joins in here, but he does the harmonies. Musically speaking, harmonies are considered the “support” of the song, which is fitting as Mickey is the most supportive member of the team)

*Tell me, baby, 'cause I need to know now, oh because my loneliness is killing me* - Mickey and Leo miss Raph and Raph misses them, referenced as “loneliness.” Furthermore, their loneliness is actually killing them because without each other, the planet is doomed.

*(and I)* - supporting Mickey harmony.

*I must confess I still believe* - Leo, Raph and Mikey all believe that they can still win. Also, it could be interpreted that Leo believes that Raph is still in there.

*(still believe)* - little harmony from Mikey, again being the support of the group.

*When I'm not with you I lose my mind* - This is very interesting, as without each other, Raph and Leo did lose their minds. Raph, in the more literal sense, as his mind was taken over by an alien parasite. Leo, in a more subliminal sense, as he became way more reckless and desperate, lacking any sense or plan and endangering himself and his team in order to save Raph.

*Give me a sign* - Leo wants a sign that the Raph he knows is still alive.

*Hit me, baby, one more time*- They are quoting Britney Spears’ hit song “Hit Me Baby One More Time”

I know that the Rise Movie was supposed to be a bit more serious, but COME ON! These are *still* the ROTTMNT turtles we’re talking about here! They’re a lot less serious and a lot more like actual teenagers in this version. And besides, their dad is literally a retired action movie star! They would *totally* pull crazy stunts like this!! I wouldn’t even be the slightest bit upset if this is how the movie actually ended (nothing against the Rise Movie. It’s amazing 🤩).
