21 Years Later it’s amazing that the Shrek Franchise goes on and it still hasn’t lost its charm and I’m grateful for that

Puss In Boot 2 is, imo, the best animated movie of this year. I just loved it so much

Sherk will never die. One of the best animated movies with last 20 or so years

I think what made the first two Shrek films so good was that they were both accessible to kids and adults. I would argue the movies got funnier as I got older when I finally got to understand the adult jokes and references.

Dude, Puss In Boots 2 rocketed itself up to my #1 spot the moment I managed to watch it. The animation, writing, music, character development. It's all just soo good.

Shrek and Shrek 2 are some of my favorite movies of all time. To hear that the last wish is better is mind blowing!

My personal ranking:

1) Puss in Boots the Last Wish (9.5/10) - Definitely my favourite of the Shrek franchise and a massive improvement from the first Puss in Boots film. Had 3 different villains and executed all of them perfectly (with one of them being possibly one of the most menacing animated villains ever), great fighting/action sequences, possibly the darkest film from the franchise and a balance with the humour which I loved plus a great life lesson. In my personal opinion, its everything Shrek Forever After should have been (executed the concept of not appreciating ones life a lot better).

2) Shrek 2 (9.5/10) - I think its roughly a tie between this and the Last Wish (prefer the dark tone of the Last Wish a bit more which is why I ranked it as my number 1), but among the films with Shrek as the main character, this is by far the best. Improved on the first Shrek film in most ways with a lovely engaging story from start to end, good humour and a great villain.

3) Shrek (9/10) - Perfect start to the franchise and I loved the introduction of Shrek, the mix between his own different life and the fairy tale characters in the film, the development of his love with Fiona & rescue of her, his & Donkey's eventual friendship and it had a great villain.

4) Puss in Boots (7.5/10) - Not a perfect film but a good spin off to the Shrek franchise and definitely an underrated film (miles better than the last two Shrek films in my opinion). Loved the humour, the exploration of Puss's origins, his relationship with Kitty and his combined friendship & enmity with Humpty in particular although I wasn't a huge fan of the other main villains.

5) Shrek the Third (6/10) - Most people regard this as the worst Shrek film, and I agree it was very weak and sloppy compared the other other films above (contradicted the second film's message, made King Harold's death into a joke, had the weakest main villain in the franchise and some of the humour felt forced). But while it was a mostly average film at best, I did feel this film felt more like a satisfying conclusion for Shrek's story than the fourth film and it did seem to keep Shrek's love for Fiona a lot more than the fourth film (which was only shown after the first half) and I did enjoy the scenes with him and Artie (who was underrated as a character) which made this film barely enjoyable for me.

6) Shrek Forever After (5.7/10) - I know this is a very unpopular opinion with most people in the Shrek fandom but this was my least favourite of the franchise. Felt like a total ripoff from the first two films combined together (especially Shrek & Fiona falling in love all over again and Shrek meeting Donkey & Puss again) and I wasn't a huge fan of the time plot story (which made even the ending feel like an alternative universe) or the repurposing of a character from the third film into the main villain (better than Charming but not great). But I did like seeing other Ogres in the Shrek Universe, some of the humour and the fact that Fiona was a more prominent character than in the third film although in my opinion, it would have been much better without the time-travel/alternate universe element.

On the whole I enjoyed the first two Shrek films and both Puss in Boots films, with Shrek 2 and The Last Wish possibly being among the greatest animated sequels ever made. On the other hand, Shrek the Third was barely enjoyable while Shrek Forever After was the only one I didn't enjoy much in the Shrek franchise - I don't care if anyone else protests to that but its my honest opinion.

Shrek 1 and 2 are some of my all time favourite movies ever. I loved them so much when I was a kid and I still love them now. Such classics to grow up with

My personal ranking:
1) Shrek 2 (Absolutely hilarious humour, fantastic story, top tier villain, great characters and cast and a phenomenal soundtrack)
2) The last Wish (incredibly unique, vibrant, dazzling animation. Both the story and Puss' character arc are very well written and very interesting, extraordinary terrifying villain, but i enjoy the magic and characters of the shrek films more)
3) Shrek forever after (very underrated movie. I enjoy what if scenarios. To me its an interesting story. To me rumpul is a great villain, who is so evil and actually succeeds in his plan. It closes out the franchise nicely. But yeah the humour and story isn't as good as it was. The magic is lost a little)
4) Shrek (very heartwarming and endearing story. A very clever concept and world. Great humour and characters. But the villain is very plain and the story isn't as rewatchable for me)
5) Puss in boots (a solid story with good characters. But overall its just not that interesting or entertaining as all the other shrek films. Not that funny either)
6) Shrek the third ( all the magic is lost. The story and humour are really bad

The Last Wish was my favorite movie of the year, super funny while also insightful and grounded. I think it is a near perfect animated film

3. Shrek Forever After.

Excellent ranking! I haven't seen The Last Wish yet, but I have the exact same ranking for the other 5 films. I'm not sure if The Last Wish will be able to surpass Shrek 2 for me though, as I think Shrek 2 is one of the greatest sequels of all time (and the movie that my wife and I saw for our first date). However, I am really looking forward to seeing it and finding out! Thanks for ranking!

I was eleven and fourteen when Shrek 1 & 2 released and it was a big part of my childhood. Never saw another movie from the franchise again. Last night I took my four year old daughter to see P&B L.W. and I was blown away. It was the story I needed to see as an adult. The map and how it tried to convince them that they didn’t really want what they were going to wish for. Dark topics you think about when you get older.

One thing i really really love about shrek forever after is that shrek is small compared to all the other ogres, he’s a little guy even though he towers over regular humans

I completely agree with the list!
But I do understand if some would swap 1st and 2nd place, both are phenomenal.
