Wrestling Bios Presents - The Complete History of the WWF European Championship

Founded during late 1997, the European Championship was active in the WWE until mid 2002. Even as a midcard title within wrestling, fans still fondly remember the years the title was around.

The European Championship was first won by The British Bulldog after defeating Owen Hart in a tournament held in Germany. The title would quickly gain prestige when Shawn Michaels defeated Bulldog at One Night Only, a UK exclusive PPV show held in Birmingham, England. As the years went on, others who would hold the title included Triple H, D'Lo Brown, William Regal, Test, Jeff Hardy and Diamond Dallas Page, to name just a few.

This video from Wrestling Bios runs down the complete history of the European title in the WWF / WWE. Every single person who held the title is included, along with some stats at the end showing who had the longest reign, who had the longest combined reign and more.

The Joke is that it would be better placed in more modern times, WWE's Rosters has a decent amount of European wrestlers.

D’Lo Brown was such an underrated wrestler. Also I loved Al Snow’s reign becuase he made a fun gimmick around the belt while also putting on some good matches and drew attention to the belt.

Should be brought back as a mid card belt for NXT UK

D'Lo Brown was a cool, but severely underrated wrestler.

One Night Only WWF In Your House. That was one of my favorite Championships. And the 1980-1990's WWF Intercontinental Championship. And the WWF World Championship 1988-1998.

I thought I read somewhere that The European championship belt was also used by Tommy Dreamer as his hardcore championship in the final days of that title because the hardcore belt itself was falling apart. This is after he won Bradshaw's Texas hardcore

I miss that Championship and great job on yet another great bio! Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember The European Championship ever being a "WWE" title like a lot of the still photos in the beginning of the bio show? They must be newer recreations.? The World Wildlife Fund worked with the WWE for decades on the shared use of that WWF acronym with the wildlife fund really getting a lot of free publicity for their cause durring the days when WWF wrestling was kid friendly but by the time the Attitude Era was over, the damage was done and the Panda would no longer share the WWF acronym with Vince again. I don't think they have recovered really. There's still people that call it The WWF, like the Saudi Crown Prince lol! So, that turned into my little diatribe on the WWF name brand. But, thanks again to Wrestling Bios! You floor me with the amount of quality content you give us Wrestling fans and this one on the WWF European Championship!

Having regional belts really made the World title belt a little more important. The American Intercontinental Title was important, but this made the top tier ranks more expansive and a little more fluid in who was really a top contender.

Im sure many would agree..European title meant more then WWE's version of a ECW world champ.. Owen vs Bulldog over any ECW world title match(WWE's ECW)

Does anyone else think that the European Championship design resembles the NWA World's Heavyweight Championship?
