The Secret to Aircraft Ownership on a Budget

In this video, I discuss the things that I have learned through my experience as ways to get into aircraft ownership on a tighter budget. Many people (including myself at one point) may look at the typical list price of a normal category aircraft and think it would never be possible to own one themselves. While the cost of aircraft does continue to rise, there are still plenty of lower cost options out there. I discuss some of these options and ways to keep the overall cost of aircraft ownership the most financially efficient. I hope this may help at least one person understand aircraft ownership is possible and the awesome opportunities it gives to those that are passionate about it.

One thing I did is drive a junky car. I drove an old used car to help afford flying. When I see someone with a new sports car I always think they could own a really nice plane instead.

Are you still building time? I finished my A&P and bought a C150 took 4 mo to get it flying again. Flew from Mi to Az and finished all my ratings in the past 4 months now looking at Skydive pilot jobs. And now considering Skybolt next...

Since this video seems like airplanes have gone up like lot of things. Early 1960's Cessna 150's have been kept outside for 20 years are selling for 36-38k now used to be able to get these old 150s for 17-20k. Really nice 1970's 150s selling for 60-80k. I'm forced now to look at light sport ultralight type aircraft I can afford down in the 20k range.

You mention the cosmetics. I read about owners spending $20k+ on upgrades such as paint jobs, interior, and avionics ( can sometimes run over $50k). Are these kinds of upgrades mandatory, especially for a non-instrument rated owner?

I realize that some major expenses such as engine overhauls, ADs, the ADSB mandate, and perhaps the radios will eventually be required. But are these others really necessary if you just want to fly without breaking the bank?
