We insulated Nikki’s loft for £145

This weekend I helped my friend Nikki insulate her loft. It doesn’t take much effort to do, and can cost a bit to get the material, but a trip to B&Q and an hour and a half in a hot / dusty attic space, and we were done.

Could have some good savings in terms of £ and CO2

Anyone wanting to do this yourselves, should know that you need proper masks (not what was used at the end of this video) and wear some coveralls otherwise those glass fibres will get all over your skin or worse inside your lungs. Its worth doing, but be safe and sensible.

A job for this autumn for a house we just moved into. We already have 200mm so thinking of topping it up with another 100mm. Need to replace the carpets, so contemplating underfloor insulation too.

When i did this i got a fair bit of condensation on my beams and membranes above the insulation - so i bought some "lap vents" to ventilate above the insulation - so the water vapour can escape.

I went with Knauf 200mm from Wickes, bought 8, only needed 7, cost £120-ish after taking the spare one back. The attic on the original house (the west wing...?!) had 50mm, then another 100mm added later to fill up between the rafters. The 200mm went across the rafters, like you did. The only thing to take care about is to keep the very edge of the eaves clear so air can still move about - a lot of houses have vents in them that could get blocked if the insulation is just wedged tightly in... You can get boards or trays to fit between rafters and insulation to help this!

Anybody doing this: Masks and sleeves or you will suffer

Ffp2 or ffp3 masks needed. You only get one set of lungs and you can't live without them. Living with damaged lungs is not something you'd want either.
On an installation note you want to make sure you don't block airflow from the eves.

Hello 🤗 it seems doable 😅 but then, she cannot use it as a storage space? Or can we do something like cover it with a wood floor? Thank you!
