On September 3, 2017 Airbus Perlan Mission II pressurized glider soared above 52,000 feet to set a new world altitude record for sailplanes. Jim Payne handed off the controls to Morgan Sandercock so he could feel the responsiveness of the special built glider at the record altitude. The historic moment was captured by the (heated) tail camera. The previous altitude of 50,722 feet was set by Einar Enevoldson and Steve Fossett in 2006. The Perlan2 was Einar's vision of the next generation to fly above the tropopause into the stratosphere.
